Isn't that what Madden is for?

Seriously, though, refs have been horrible for a long time. They screw stuff up constantly either through ineptitude or bias or both and their decisions can effect outcomes of games almost as much as players on the fields it shouldn't be that way.

An NFL referee isn't as important as any of those things, but millions of dollars are involved in any given NFL game. That's why people get upset when mistakes are made, especially blatant ones.

If I am right about what the DJ's motion, the final spot's only effect was another foot or so.  The main issue it was already called a first down.  There was no challenge, but had if there had been, then it would have been an issue. 

Take the yellow line out of those pictures and you are left with "I think" there is a difference between the two spots.  I have no idea whether the NFL uses the yellow line or not in instant replay.  My suspicion is no.

That may have been why Arians did not throw the flag.  Wasn't there a commercial break after the play?  Or at least more than sufficient time for the buc personnel to see it, or have someone call from Tampa watching the live broadcast.  Any review would have shown the first spot already making the first down and the second spot 8" mistake not worth the timeout.

Yeah. I saw how far the ball was extended, and the ref from the top looked like he was on the money, while the ref at the bottom came in & spotted it short. When he did that, I thought to myself "What the fug?" But then when he moved the ball more in line with the top referee, I was like, "OK."

That's what happened, but the DJ made the forward pointing motion in front of his chest telling the referee it was a first down.  I don't think he was correct, but that was his initial take.  I remember that because the announcers were saying right at that time that it was going to be short.

To answer Reno's question, I believe the clock ticked down to the 2 minute warning right about then.  So, the Bucs had the break to look at it.  The question in their minds had to be whether the replay was going to show anything that would cause them to 1) respot the ball, and 2) take back the original first down determination.  That's why I wondered if the replay they look at shows the yellow line.  My guess is that it does not because that is not official and could be wrong, itself.

So, the original spot looked short (compared to the yellow line), the DJ signals to the referee it is a first down (which is his call at that point), he tosses to ball to the U or FJ who then spots it about 8" or so further forward, which was first down distance.....and the Bucs opted to not challenge any of it.

Yeah they make plenty of mistakes, just like players and coaches, etc. Personally, I'd rather have a human game full of flaws than some sort of digital "perfection". Life is messy, and I have no problem with sport being the same.

Yea i noticed.  Told my bucs fan buddy it was a makeup for the horrendous spot when cam got the first down. At least this one woulda been close anyway
