If Allen starts what was the 3rd round pick for Grier worth?

So you drafted Grier for insurance incase Newton isn't healthy and here we are.. only you are turning to an undrafted free agent who was on the roster last year and beat out your insurance policy in preseason. This is the exact reason hurney needs to be canned. Throwing away third round picks pissing in our faces and calling it rain. It's not just this pick, Its almost any pick after the first round.

All I'm saying is if you are passing potential starters in the 3rd round and swinging at "insurance policies" I want to see that plan come to fruition. Looks like he is scrapping that policy as well and these kind of mistakes can't be allowed any longer.

Have you thought to consider that the pick was maybe not for this year and was actually for the future?

Nope because is Cam is finished and doesnt play we picking top 10 and guess what that pick Is gonna be.. Grier was a panicked hometown pick that probably will never see the light of day.

Y’all starting to kill me with putting draft grades on dudes 2 games into there first season, I waited patiently for butler to produce anything worth a damn and y’all ready to consider Grier and little a bust already

Well there's a simple explanation for that -- those people are morons

I agree with OP only because I think Allen is the better player. Hurney did the same thing with Matt Moore and Clausen and wasted a second round pick and any chance at a competitive offense. Only good that came out of that was Cam.

Grier is supposed to be a long term project though.

No, he wasn't.  Top 10 QB picks aren't sure things either.  Grier was a QB with potential that we can develop.  Maybe he becomes the life long backup to a guy we draft in the top of the 1st round.  Maybe he becomes better than that guy.

You can not say that finding a possible QB replacement is not important.  Obviously, drafting one in the 1st round this past year would be naive, but trying to hit with Grier isn't a terrible move with what we know about Cam now.

He is still a rookie which means the coaching staff may not believe he is ready yet. Starting him too early could also ruin him. Most players need time to develop.

So the Panthers have gone into the last two seasons with works in progress as their backup plan if Cam couldn't play?

Failing to plan is planning to fail.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
