If you could bring back 4 former players in their prime who would it be

Question was asked on WFNZ this morning, thought it would make interesting discussion . Here’s my three;

1)Steve Smith: a no-brainer. Just throw it his way and he’ll catch it

2)Kevin Greene: would be an absolute beast in Ron’s 3-4. Double digit sacks easily.

3)Ryan Kalil: Paradis has been horrible so far. Would instantly upgrade the o-line.

4)Cam Newton: Cam in his prime takes this team on a deep playoff run, no doubt

Did their prime have to be with the Panthers? If not, Reggie White is about as easy of a choice as you can get. Evan Mathis in his prime could also really help this team. Also interesting to imagine what Thomas Davis in his prime with no knee injury would have been like. We got a glimpse before the first injury. He would have been an absolute monster.

Depending on the answer to the first question:

1. Reggie White or Julius Peppers

2. Steve Smith

3. Cam

4. Evan Mathis or Ryan Kalil or ... John Kasay

Honestly we’d win the Super Bowl with just prime Cam and Steve provided this oline keeps playing competently.

Conisdering how our defense has been rushing the passer

1. Smitty- shouldnt even be in question

2. Ryan Kalil- dude was a Beast in his prime and Paradis has struggled

3. Gross- Daley has looked good, in a small sample.  But Gross was a true franchise LT.  Could maybe put Daley at RT and Moton at LG at that point

4. Cam if we're talking healthy in their prime.  2015 Cam was a monster.

What makes this an interesting discussion is not just who's great from the past, but who fills holes we have now. I could say Sam Mills, but Luke's got that MLB thing pretty well taken care of.

1. Smitty no brainer as others have said.

2. Peppers in his prime also a no brainer.

3. Gonna go with Kalil over Gross just based on the fact center looks much weaker atm than LT.

4. Tempted to pull a name out no one has brought up: Michael Bates. However the changes to kickoffs have made returning skills less needed, so can't justify it just on his value as a gunner. I think the consensus of Reggie White is kind of hard to argue with.

    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
