NFL: Player wish list for the next CBA

I would be interested to see if the NFLPA weighs in on putting a team in London should it become more than just a cocktail hour conversation topic.

A London team would almost certainly mean an added bye week somewhere given the fact that every game means one team getting hosed with at least 16-20 hours of non-stop flight time (that's just NY -  London) back and forth across the pond, whether it's the London team or the visiting team from here.

Players could get more money by changing the length of drafted player's contracts. Forget four years, the max contract for any player drafted is three. That would bring top players into the money faster.

Another point for them to consider is the tag system. Get rid of it.

Both of those issues would direct more money the player's way, faster. The problem is, most of the player reps are veterans who really don't care about the newly drafted players.

I like the healthcare for life, but think it's impractical. What about the guys who are drafted and play one year or less? Does that qualify for healthcare for life?

It should.

Do you expect them to get anything major without giving up something significant in return? At best, I can see some sort of relaxation of marijuana and possibly some health care expansion just because it’s a PR win for the owners but I really can’t see anything else without conceding on an extra game.

The owners will always win in a lockout situation. I don’t care how much the NFLPA says they have saved. The rank and file on minimum and rookie contracts far outnumber the stars who have enough money to wait out the storm and each vote counts the same.

If I was a player I'd add two games (in exchange to reducing preseason to 2 games) for lifetime healthcare and marijuana rule relaxation for sure.

I think the lifetime healthcare request is ridiculous and I doubt this will ever happen.  Back in the day NFL players didn't know the risks and didn't make a lot of money.  Now everyone knows the risks and they get paid accordingly.  I believe the minimum salary is $480k which is a lot of money and this is the minimum.  Also, this salary is for only 4-5 months of the year.  There are tons of jobs that are much more dangerous than playing in the NFL and those people pay their own healthcare after they retire and don't make anything close to an NFL salary.

Yeah, but the reason the risks are known today is because the league got caught lying. Might as well take the shot & see what you can get.

I was thinking this same thing, they want a 50/50 split but then want someone to pay their healthcare for the rest of their life. News flash stop buying 17 cars, jewelry that costs more than most people make in a year, and other such bull and you can pay you own healthcare with no problem. People out here living on retirement checks of like $1000 a month have to buy their own medicine and health care plans.

    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
    • Supposedly he plans on staying in college for all 4 years.
