Maybe the hedge fund guy who made 12 billion dollars spotting value isn't as reactionary as this fan base, and recognized Marty Hurney has drafted more Pro Bowlers and Hall of Famers in the past two decades than all but 3 general managers in the entire NFL.

Why get rid of a guy who is almost guaranteed to draft a pro bowler with our upcoming 1st round pick, especially after seeing DJ Moore emerge as the 4th best receiver in the NFL (statistically).

Hurney needs some help with free agency, which is why Tepper is adding an assistant GM;  you have to keep Hurney around for the draft

Another potential reason: Kevin Colbert's status in Pittsburgh is still up in the air.

Might not want to commit to anything until you know what happens to him.

Hard to fire a guy coming off drafting DJ Moore so late in the 1st round (4th in the NFL in yards), and Brian Burns relatively late in the 1st round

You get a new GM, the draft becomes a crapshoot again.  Much better to keep around the guy with a record of never missing in the early parts of the draft and hire some assistant gms to help him with the areas he's weak at.

Could also basically be setting up the "assistant GM" to take over for Marty in the offseason.

Hurney with and assistant that can potentially take over after him and help with the head coach hiring I wouldn’t be mad at. Seems like a good move given hurney 2.0 track record
