So injuries and bad coaching are Hurney's fault? I want him replaced as bad as anyone, but anyone dogging him for the rookie performances this year is being silly.

Burns - Had a great start until he broke his hand throwing a tantrum. He'll be back and will get better. Ron should have played him more.  RIVERA IS AN IDIOT---HIS "WIN TODAY" ATTITUDE KEEPS YOUTH FROM DEVELOPING

Little - Two concussions, nothing Hurney could do about that.  I HAVE A FEELING LITTLE TO LG IS THE MOVE---IF WE GET A LT.  HOWEVER, LITTLE NEEDS A PRESEASON AND CAMP BEFORE JUDGING.  MATSKO SEEMED TO QUIT THIS YEAR.

Grier - The Turners campaigned hard for this guy according to some. Wish they would have taken him to DC with them. Still, we're stuck with him on his rookie contract, so it'll be interesting to see if he progresses under new coaching.  I HESITATE TO JUDGE ANY QB ON THE PANTHERS THIS YEAR--THE OL WAS THAT BAD.  IF YOU HAVE PRESSURE FROM THE OUTSIDE, YOU CAN DEAL WITH THAT TO A DEGREE.  BUT MIDDLE PRESSURE WITH OUTSIDE PRESSURE?  HARD TO PLAY QB.

Christian Miller - Hurt a bunch, but looked good when he was on the field. We're getting a new Sports Conditioning staff. Hallelujah.  HAS A HISTORY OF BEING INJURED A LOT AT BAMA---IF HE CANNOT STAY ON FIELD, HE CAN NOT HELP US

Jordan Scarlett - Not sure why the Rivera/Turner brain trust never used this bowling ball of a running back. He looked good in the few times he was on the field.  (I LOVED HIM IN PRE SEASON--I THINK WE ARE SET AT RB, TBH)

Dennis Daley - SIXTH ROUNDER from a small school SOUTH CAROLINA? , thrown into the LT spot on a terrible line. Still he looked good toward the beginning. We have to hope the new regime can get him coached up. If so, he might be a steal.  HE WAS DEVELOPING AT SC.  LOOKED GOOD AT TIMES.  HE WILL BE SOLID ONE DAY (MAYBE DEPTH)

Terry Godwin - Meh.

This piece had nothing to do with David Newton, btw.

I know that's why I was shocked to see something from that company that wasn't complete trash by that idiot.  It's mostly what filters into the Huddle from ESPN.

"We" who?

You got a mouse in your pocket?

Some seem to forget that not everyone was throwing confetti after a couple of starts from Allen and the LTs. Things like film and reality caught up to most but I see not all.

No one was really complaining about these picks last April, the team's plan went to poo the moment Cam was done for the season. Early on the defense was playing lights out, more than anything in some cases with this being a lost season at the beginning of the losing streak and especially after the blown win versus New Orleans guys started to check out.

I don't think there is anyway around that, all of these picks had college production and pedigree, we were in ''win now'' mode so to speak, it's why we went after McCoy, it's why we went after Boston during TC when it was determined Gaulden was a failed experiment.

Little, and both Daley had games / stretches where they looked very good, as well as the rookie moments, add in that Little's campaign was marred by injury and you can't do anything about it. Daley was one of if not the highest graded rookie tackle for a decent stretch as well.

As far as Miller, again with the Rivera era, another young player forced to essentially red shirt his rookie year due to ''vets'' mostly even aside from any injuries, and as we all know that happened with Burns as well.

The overall theme for last year was injury, it derailed a lot of positions, QB, T, IDL (Short, then Poe), add in a floundering inexperienced QB / offense and there was never anyway that little bit of hope was going to be sustained, if anything we learned how good of a blocking OL we have for the run even with injuries.

When a team has a bad year no media outlet is going to give the class as a whole high marks.

There were plenty of us who hated the Greg Little and Will Grier picks.

I think the fact that we can both make valid arguments about the outcome of a rookie class’s first season shows the book hasn’t been written. Also, to say it’s historically bad isn’t fair when that determination won’t truly be mad for a couple more years.

Also, my response was mainly geared towards the guy saying this draft was done with the short term in mind. Based on the positions we picked I highly disagree with that.

Since I'm the one who said this draft seemed short term, I'll respond. I think the draft was short sighted at the time because Ron was on the hot seat. Another losing season and he's out of here. Also, we were moving to a 3-4 defense. Basing your entire draft on what a coach with one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel is very risky. Now we're left with 2 guys in Burns and Miller who may or may not fit the scheme. We spent 2 day to picks reaching for a tackle when there were major concerns with the interior of our line. If Cam went down to injury, Grier was not the solution and never would be. He was a project. We went into the season with an UDFA and a 3rd round project as backups and a QB coming off a second shoulder surgery. That is short sighted IMO. He did well grabbing another tackle late in the draft, depth at the time that made sense. Spending a draft pick on a RB with Ron's history of riding his star into the ground didn't really make sense either. The guy was never going to have a chance to contribute. And even though we drafted a WR at 7, we still failed to get a return guy.

The whole thing just didn't make sense to me with the coaching position we faced. If Ron was let go, which he eventually was, it really limits what you can do with the next guy you hire or your #1 draft pick. I'm not criticizing the players' performance. It's just that being faced with your head coach and staff possibly headed out the door, reaching for player (and Hurney has a history of reaches and horrible draft day trades) and taking guys who don't really fill an immediate need with so many holes, it all feels very short sighted.

If the season goes perfect and no one gets hurt, we're on a SB run. If one piece fails, well, we all saw the result of that.

I'm confused... are you talking about the team in the article whose rookies were evaluated by ESPN as 4th best overall?

That team?

:shades:

Imagine your GM going 9-23 in his first two seasons and chest-thumping that ESPN rated their rookie class as 4th best after one season.

Yup. Even though I mocked Grier to us in the 3rd because of the man-crush with Will was hardly hidden, I still hated the pick.  I didn't want Little at ALL, let alone moving up for him and losing another pick in the process.  That's like getting sucker punched in the gut and as you are trying to catch your breath, taking a kick to the nads. I should be used to the utter disappointment every April by now, but alas, I hope against hope that Hurney can one day pull a decent draft out of his a$$.
