Shouldn’t the real question be why would Mario want to play here, at this stage of his career? And accept a team-friendly deal to do it?

It’s steady. I’d be fine paying him on the high end too. But not a long term deal and not top DE money. I’d say higher end of the Upper-middle group, 3-4 years.

You have to think, we can’t even field a defensive roster at this point. Every piece counts.

Mario and KK are much better suited to 4-3, too.

Of course, total panther move during this rebuild to bring back a 33 year old edge.

Panther lacking football IQ is showing more with each passing day. Draft time I fully except a bunch of D-3 guys, Baylor/Temple players, and at least two special team specialist.

GO PANTHERS, KEEP POUNDING!!!!

So where does Burns play in that scenario. Why invest in a 33 y/o WDE, when the team is hoping their 1st rounder can fit that role?

Every dollar spent now is one less the team will have down the road.

If it's a Tre Boston kind of deal with minimal commitment and VERY team-friendly deal, then I'm okay with it.

My bigger concern is what Jourdan and Joe alluded to in their Athletic piece about all 3 of the key decision makers in our front office being on the same page. I feel like Tepper and Rhule are more aligned than Marty is with either of them.

I don't really want Addison back because it goes against that "younger/hungry" core players that you want to build around, but we do have a huge vacancy at edge rusher, so I kinda get the attraction. I just hope Hurney doesn't give him some stupid high dollar/high commitment deal that we are locked into for the next 4 years. Addison has a year left of similar production, IMO....maybe two if we're lucky. I don't' see how a 35 year old DE helps us in two years.

Burns should be the opposite end of Mario on the A team pass rush. Burns needs a year longer to really develop some run skills so we need a vet min or rookie DE that can sub on heavy run plays.

Mario was by far the best DL we had last season and potentially the season before that.

If Mario can sustain his play for 2 or so years at least it would be a major boon for rebuilding.

How would he be a major boon towards rebuilding if he’s gone by the time it bears any positive results?

Out whole defense is/was a “pass rush” package. Teams just run at Burns, and Mario can’t play SDE in a 4-3 either. And we are still with the question of why he would want to play here.

Still wanted Irvin and butler back on good deals, Irvin played just as relentless last season, and was hoping Rhule, if they kept Vernon, would get him to improve on his performance from last year.

a glimmer of hope

I have a feeling we're not even going to bother attempting to re-sign Vernon Butler, he was a major reason our run defense was historically bad.

He can play the game and he’s a B+ player heading into his golden years. Sign a good contract that would allow us to trade him in a year or two, to a team that is competitive. Such as a steeler-esque team to finish his contract cheap(we all know how the CBA is gonna go). Ya, this is all way above Marty Hurney but it’s the smart thing to do.
