Matt Miller: many sources around league believe Panthers will attempt to "tank" for Trevor Lawrence

it is pretty clear the Panthers are not deeply concerned with winning now.

however, that is not tanking.  from everything we are hearing, the ownership have bought in to a multi-season 'program building.'  but I expect them to be as competitive as they can given that.

Bengals, Redskins, Browns, Jets, Giants, Dolphins, Lions, Cardinals, Buccaneers...

What are the odds of the Panthers out-tanking 100% of the teams on that list?

If we move on from Cam and/or his foot and/or shoulder doesn't hold up... not terrible. If we don't make major defensive roster moves we're gonna field an all-time terrible defense. We better be able to put up points in bunches next season in order to compete. I wouldn't be surprised if it looks a lot like Cam's rookie season. We were able to score enough to compete, but our D wasn't able to consistently get enough stops to notch many actual wins.

His logic is flawed. He’s throwing stuff against the wall and seeing what sticks. It’s trash. And that guy, to be honest, has a track record of being dead wrong about a lot of stuff. (Which is fine, we’re all human, but if you’re going to be wrong, at least be specifically wrong. Speaking in platitudes and still being dead wrong is a special kind of bad.)

He said on the radio today: Trevor Lawrence is the most popular football player in the Carolinas, and it’s just the thing this new owner needs to get his new facility and new tenure off and running. Everything about that is just completely wrong, or unnecessary. None of that has anything to do with putting together a winning operation.

It's crazy that Hurney took over a stacked roster that strolled right into 11 wins and just a couple years later people are like "yeah guys I think we have a pretty good shot at being worse than the Bucs and Browns."

That path was partially started by Gettleman with some terrible moves(Kalil) and his poor drafting at the end. Then this process was accelerated by some more bad drafting by Hurney. If you have 3-5 years of mediocre to poor drafting in the modern NFL, your roster is going to be in pretty bad shape, no matter what franchise you are.

First of all, he said most popular COLLEGE player in the Carolina’s which is true.

Secondly, how is any of what he said completely wrong?

Trevor Lawrence has a sh!t ton to do with putting together a winning operation. You’d be stupid to think otherwise.

Getting back to .500 next season would be a sign of progress, and, a natural waypoint along the road to gradually building a championship organization over time.

Tepper has said absolutely nothing about taking a detour through 2-14'ville during the road trip ahead.

100% agree with @parker that the tank narrative is driven by uninformed media cadre.

    • It’s wild to me that so many of you guys are threatened by the idea of an opposing team fan who is polite in 2025. He’s been posting here on and off for years, usually when our teams play each other which hasn’t been for a while. I’d maybe understand this treatment if it was a falcons or saints fan, but packers fans in general are one of the nicer fan bases as long as you aren’t another NFC north team (especially the bears).
    • Some players excel on the big stage, while others freeze and succumb to the pressure. I’m not convinced Cam took a dive. I think he didn’t handle the stage very well. The pressure got to him and he folded. He wouldn’t be the first quarterback or player to struggle in a Super Bowl. Two HOF examples - John Elway and Jim Kelly. The 2002 MVP, Rich Gannon, threw 5 interceptions against the Bucs. Poor performances happen.  Unless of course you believe all these players threw the games they played in, but if that occurred, surely someone by now would have admitted taking a dive? 🤷‍♂️
    • It was always a matter of time with Cam’s playing style and a shorter shelf life than passers that protect themselves. I suppose Cam could have still been playing in 2028 ten years after the hit took place, but he would need to have evolved as a quarterback and become more of a passer than the dual threat maestro he was. It’s sad because it makes us think of what could have been, but I do feel it was always a matter of time until all the hits took their toll.
