Derrick Brown Combine

I see a lot of people claiming that Brown had a bad Combine. I honestly think that's just because we saw some truly freakish performances from some freakishly large men at this year's Combine.

I like to look at current player comps when looking at Combine performances.

Derrick Brown - 6'5" 326 pounds with 34.25" arms and 9" hands

40: 5.16 seconds

Bench: 28 reps

Vertical: 27"

Broad Jump: 108"

3 cone: 8.22 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.79 seconds

The best comps? Just two the best DTs currently in the NFL.

Akiem Hicks - 6'5" 318 pounds with 35" arms and 10.25" hands

40: 5.23 seconds

Bench: 26 reps

Vertical: 31.5"

Broad Jump: 108"

3 cond: 7.75 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.86 seconds

Jurrell Casey - 6'1" 300 pounds with 32" arms and 9" hands

40: 5.06 seconds

Bench: 26 reps

Vertical: 27.5"

Broad Jump: 101"

3 cone: 7.75 seconds

20 yard shuttle: 4.78 seconds

When you compare Brown's Combine performance with current proven elite NFL DTs instead of guys in his own class who may or may not prove to be workout wonders there's nothing alarming about it.

if we trade down and still get brown i will be ecstatic, imo that's the best win win for the panthers this year unless a top tier talent like Okudah is there

Yep Okudah for me. Brown would be a bad pick imo. He has not that great of talent for #7. There a couple guys I would take their instead of him

It’s the 3 cone that people were talking about as a predictive measure for DT’s. Not sure how true that is but he really underperformed in the area.

and according to the measurements given, brown lags significantly behind both hicks (7.75) and casey (7.75 also)

Per NFLSavant.com, here are the average 3-Cone Drill times at the Combine for the pass rushing positions:

  • Outside Linebacker, 7.1 seconds
  • Defensive End, 7.23 seconds
  • Defensive Tackle, 7.59 seconds

of course, we dont nessicarily need brown to get sacks, his job is to play the run. i still think its concerning that his time was so much worse than the average though.

I agree with the basis of this and think that though these numbers are for the most part indicative of athletic performance, Brown is still a beast.

For me,

1a - Okudah

1b - Simmons

---------------------------------

2a - Trade Back

2b - Brown

I think Okudah takes away one half of the field and/or an opposing team's opposite player much the way White or PP do.

I think Simmons is a 6'4" Honey Badger and though he isn't Luke, would very quickly fill that LB room with an insane talent beside Shaq.

I think Brown can be a dominant disrupting force in the middle of our line and compliments KK well, and can be an anchor for us longterm.

Not really a "wrong"answer here, but with the hole left by Bradberry and Cockrell, CB1 is my #1 need area...with LB not far behind that. I think we can find a stud DT in round 2 that will provide us a franchise cornerstone, while still adding a top-tier CB or LB/Rover at 7.

No doubt in my mind we have 3 targeted players at 7 if we stay.. And either 1 would have me happy...

Question for you @LinvilleGorge..

As you mock draft what combinations are you having a problem with the most??

Example

if we go Simmons 1st where do you go next??

Okuada and Brown are easier for me to mock out a strong draft class..

But Simmons 1st makes it a little harder to mock a solid draft without leaving a hole some where...
