The "virtual" draft

Shouldn’t be any different than other years with the exception teams won’t have onsite reps to talk to each other. Teams can still call and email each other trade offers, many of which might even be done before the draft even starts

To be honest, I was kind of expecting this year's draft to be weird even before it became virtual.

Given how the offseason has gone, that'd be no surprise.

Why the F do IT employees need to go to people's houses? Are NFL teams BYOD?

Seriously the NFL needs to hire an AV professional like me to help them during this time. They are fuging stupid.

You work in AV? What company?

For one, because as anyone in any form of IT or tech support will tell you, there's always one thing you just can't fix.

The user.

You're gonna be going from maybe one or two people on a phone to who knows how many people on the phones. A lot can happen.

Mind you, all of this could wind up going smoothly and without a hitch.

Though admittedly, as long as it didn't have a negative impact on the Panthers, it might be more entertaining if it didn't :)

I can see the war room stuff being a potential issue but the GM to GM calls should be fine. No video was going on there, so just normal communication and the worst case scenario is you can’t have five people listening if you don’t know how to conference people in on your iPhone. Group text would work. The team to team based on how many actual trades happen on draft day is clearly the least of the worries and the easiest to work out.

That, plus the Patriots hacking our info.

We joke about it but I've read that teams are genuinely concerned about that sort of thing.

I work in house for a software company but we contract labor with some of the big players. I have my CTS-I.

Awesome, I am in the industry in a different capacity. Funny to see that on here.

I have no idea what they're setting up but it all sounds like it's probably too complicated. All they need to do is set up something like a Zoom webinar with a super complex password or MFA authentication to it (can set that up on anyones laptop), lock down the stream to only be coming from one source (wherever Roger Goodell is) controlled by a Tricaster or something, and the teams just watch him the whole time. The teams communicate with each other the same ways they always have. Emails, phone calls, etc to make trades. The picks are sent to Goodell via some secure channel like an encrypted chat or email. Done.

Zoom isn't secure at all.

If people think 5 or 7 key exec's from the same team aren't going to convene in the same location they are kidding themselves --- and there's no reason they shouldn't.

Schefter's tweet is total B.S., this draft will go off without a hitch.

As for the Panthers specifically, in addition to superior intellect and the best information, the making of Tepper's $12BN bankroll hinged on state of the art technology and he has always had the best of the best --- still the case.

If any team gains an edge in the 2020 draft due to technology it will be your Carolina Panthers.
