Sometimes it's who you know...

It hasn't been talked about much, but Tua Tagovailoa has an old acquaintance on the Panthers coaching staff in an interesting position. That'd be former runningback / now quarterback coach  Jake Peetz, who previously worked with Alabama quarterbacks when he was on Nick Saban's staff in 2018 (Tua obviously being one of them).

Peetz is one of the very few Ron Rivera staff members that the Panthers wanted to keep, and they apparently wanted him bad. Originally it was thought that this was due to his work with Christian McCaffrey, but then the team surprisingly switched him to a different role and gave the job of coaching McCaffrey to former Baylor runningback coach Jeff Nixon.

Since his name has come up here, funny thing about McCaffrey: Prior to drafting him, the team hired someone who was pretty familiar to their potential pick. That was receiver coach Lance Taylor, who had been McCaffrey's position coach at Stanford.

So in the same vein, could the switch of Peetz to the quarterback role signal an interest in Tua?

It's possible, but here's the thing...

We've got another guy on staff, someone the Panthers also wanted pretty bad and who's in a higher coaching tier than Peetz. That guy already helped get an old pupil of his on the team. In fact, his former charge not only landed a decent contract but also unseated an entrenched (albeit injured) starter in the process.

So with Joe Brady now having brought Teddy Bridgewater on board, would he then turn around and bring in immediate competition in the form of Tua?

It's generally accepted that Bridgewater is - as the first syllable of his name says - a bridge, but he's a well paid bridge who's indicated then at least he believes he has a shot to earn a more permanent spot. Throw in that there are rumors the Panthers like next year's quarterback crop a lot better than they do this year's, not to mention the fact that Tua may not even fall to them, and it becomes iffy whether Peetz has a true shot at coaching his former pupil again.

If, however, he did get picked, and there were to be an internal tug of war, you have to figure that Brady would win. It's logical to believe Brady played a role in Bridgewater unseating Cam Newton. That's some pretty strong advocacy, to be certain.

But would there be a tug of war, or would Brady be open to bringing his QB coach's former student in and just seeing what happens? Heck, do we even know how big an advocate Peetz would be of Tua? It's logical to assume, but nobody really can say.

So many possibilities, and so much we don't know...

The only thing I can really say with much certainty is that given the dynamics, it would sure be fun to see what kind of discussions are going on behind-the-scenes right now...

...and what they might mean for our team's future.

I have a really really really really really bad feeling about Tua in the NFL. RG3 vibes.

Yeah, the injury concerns are REAL. Honestly, it's gonna piss me off even more if we cut Cam due to injury concerns, then we turn around and sign a FA QB who has the most severe knee injury possible on his medical chart and then draft a QB at #7 who hasn't played a game since Bo Jackson'ing himself.

No argument...

Probably doesn't help, but remember just last year we were discussing how the team was going into a season depending on a fair number of older players or players who were recovering from significant injury (Paradis, for example). Not to mention we hadn't really secured a backup for another certain player whose health was in question.

It didn't go so well.

Tua either comes out of this draft as the best QB/player in general, or he's injured, with no in between to me.  Would be insanely excited about the idea, but also can't see us passing up safer picks who can still be great.

yeah we can't risk taking the best player in the draft at the most important position on the field when we can safely take some guy who can come in and get high Madden ratings at some pointless position

Bridgewater didn’t unseat Cam. Cam did it to himself by wanting a longer contract. End of the day, Cam has to look out for himself. But, it wasn’t the smartest time to try getting one under a new head regime. He should’ve just shut up and went out there this year to try proving that he deserve an extended contract. Now, he’s without a job and is promoting himself everyday on social media in attempt to get signed. Tepper is an idiot but he knows business. Bridgewater is not going to put fans in seats like Cam. Bridgewater was signed to give time for Rhule and Brady’s qb of the future who will be drafted on Thursday. Number 13 from Alabama.
