"Derrick Brown is not a sexy pick."

Recommended Posts

Brown is a inside the phone booth mauler. He was constantly double teamed and still was SEC Defensive player of the year. He is not going to be Chris Jones or Fletcher Cox and generate 15 sacks a year. What he will do is get you 5 to 7 sacks and make every other DLman and LB that much better. As such he was the perfect pick, sexy or not.

I was watching the picks on my phone.  Once Okuda was off the boards, I thought they had two can't-miss picks left and we all know who they are.  I preferred Brown over Simmons because I value the impact a strong DL can make.  They can take plays away without it ever showing up on their own part of the stat sheet.

Everybody worries about what Brady will do in Tampa.  If you look at his history, disruptive DLs have made him look rather normal.  That is not at all unusual.

Then there is the subject of our 5.2 average rush against last year.

Oh, and the last thing I want is Hurney trying to make sexy picks.  I'm sure he thought Clausen and Grier were sexy picks..  Stick to the script, Marty, you don't ad lib well.

The only sexy picks Marty needs to be involved with is which cheerleader he prefers to watch on Sundays

It’s only not a sexy pick if you don’t think winning is sexy. Other than Young and maybe Burrow, Brown helps us win games more than any other player. Especially a LB. A DT like this is so much more valuable than just stuffing the run and the occasional sack. This one player, like Star, allows the UT next to him, DEs, and LBs stay cleaner than they would and have room to do their jobs better. As well as collapsing pockets and rushing passes to make DBs jobs easier. This kind of player is NOT easier to find. DTs who are good at making everyone around them are far and few in between. Star was one and it was proven when he left and our defense fell to poo.

It absolutely is not a secret pick when the most athletic linebacker/chess piece in history was on the board and picked behind us no. Brown is a great mauler.. he will make the whole defense better because of the attention he will require from other teams. He is not suh,or Donald, or fletcher cox who will put up double digit sacks.

Again he is a massive  man and a great foundation for the defense. But calling it sexy.. he is not Brian burns or a skilled position athlete. No.

Why they picked him: Carolina has only two defensive tackles on its roster in Kawann Short and Woodrow Hamilton, so no position has a bigger need. Put Brown and his run-stopping ability next to Pro Bowler Short and his pass-rushing ability, and the middle of the defense will be as stout as any in the NFL. Opponents literally ran away from Brown's side at Auburn.

Biggest question: Brown didn't have a great showing at the combine and his inside push on the pass rush needs improving. He gets by on sheer power and size. This is nitpicking, though, because there is no better run-stopper in the draft. -- David Newton

I didn't want Brown at 7, but here is what I think is going to happen.

Basically Brown doesn't have much in the way of pass rushing moves, but he does have a bull rush. At the NFL level some linemen will be big enough to handle his bull rush, and some linemen won't be able to handle it. Teams will know ahead of time if their linemen are big/strong enough to handle Brown's basic bull rush, and team's who have smaller linemen will help with a double team on Brown, which in turn helps KK and the pass rush overall.

NFL teams aren't as slack and clueless as college teams. They're not going to allow a situation where Brown is matched up one on one with a smaller/weaker lineman who Brown can in turn toss into the QB thereby killing both of them. That poop is not going to happen at the NFL level other than maybe once in a blue moon.

Brown is a great run blocker when he keeps his pads low and fights for it, but sometimes he's standing up too high. He's here to stuff the run, and in certain situations draw a double team.

Brown is an enormous human being at 6'5" 317 pounds, and he'll add weight with out strength and conditioning program. I love his ability to stop the run, and I want him to become a superstar at the position.

Ultimately I wanted Hebert or Tua, or trade down for more picks if anyone was interested, and they may not have been.

Here's what's going to happen.

Brown is going to get just a few sacks a season. But by eating up blockers our rush linemen and backers are going to get more sacks than if he wasn't on the field. Value doesn't always show up on your own stat sheet, sometimes it shows up on the stat sheets of your team mates because of what you do that just simply isn't measured.

My biggest worry is that KK is used up and isn't going to do much.

Brown is a guy that can anchor our DL for the next 8-10 years. He's brutally strong and even though he isn't an elite athlete once he develops his technique further he is likely to be a punishing pocket collapsing DT. I can see him eventually putting linemen on skates pretty regularly. He isn't an insane athlete but he will be a big impact on that DL, IMO. And at a position where he can have game changing impact.

I love Simmons but unless he develops(or is primarily used as) into a Von Miller type edge rusher, he isn't at a position where you will have quite the same impact on an offense. No slight to him at all but LB's are currently the lesser positional value in the modern NFL.
