Did Rhule lie about Newton?

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

This discussion has come up again recently in a couple of threads.

My take has been that while he engaged in coachspeak and very flexible "politician" style language, Rhule stopped short of telling an outright lie. And for the record, the same can be said of Tepper.

But I know a lot of folks disagree with that idea. Some branded Rhule as a lying sack of sh-t (Tepper too) and made it quite clear that they wouldn't take anything he said in the future at face value again.

So I'm curious, where do you stand?

Were Rhule and Tepper just doing what football guys do, or was this a violation of the fans' trust?

You tell me.

Coaching is the very definition of double speak. I don't think he intentionally lied at any point. I think that things just deteriorated faster than anyone thought would happen. Once Cam started the twitter wars it was over as far as Rhule was concerned, imo.

Stop being wishy-washy.

They lied.

Rhule lied.

Hurney lied.

Tepper hard-core lied.

You yourself have pointed it out before... teams fugging lie.

Stop equivocating ex post facto.

They fugging lied.  And my boy Cam (along with myself) was a damn fool for ever believing them for a millisecond (Cam from naivety, me from hopefulness cuz at my age I should have known better).

Rhule is new and is perfectly willing to do whatever he can to impress the boss.

 Hurney is a yes-man.

Tepper is a goddam disease.

My guess? Rhule is more aware and skillful in coach-speak and politics than we have seen from Fox and Rivera. It was a bad look because of how it was handled by Tepper and Hurney rather than saying that from the beginning and not directly before not being able to trade and then releasing Cam. That was a bad look but I have no idea how much and the dynamics of what really went down and why.

Trust has to be earned and he had a nice draft but has a ton to prove before I trust him. I hope he does amazing and overcomes the issues we have had as a franchise. It's going to take some time and I'm happy to see what he can do.

It occurred to me that you might have a strong opinion on this topic.

I think they were open to keeping Cam and Rhule was honest about wanting to coach him. I think something happened between negotiations last minute. Either way it’s one or the other. I don’t want to believe or be a fan of a FO that operates that way. But since we don’t know all  the facts we have to accept it’s a possibility they did lie.

But for me in order for them to be that deceptive then Cam would have had to have been a real asshole and from all that we can tell he was a total pro and a great teammate and leader. The way it currently stands he absolutely deserved better.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
