Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark on Friday that if the sport doesn't do a better job of managing the coronavirus, it could shut down for the season, sources familiar with the conversation told ESPN.

Networks broadcasting MLB games have been alerted to look at possible alternate programming after this weekend should the league shut down, sources told ESPN's Keith Olbermann.

There will be no NFL

It's interesting that the NFL is not considering the bubble concept. Most stadiums aren't having fans anyway.

I dont see how many of yall can't comprehend the difference between 18 NBA teams with 10-15 players and 10 coaches from 32 NFL teams with 53 players EACH, 20-40 coaches, trainers, doctors, etc....

The NBA is also 3/4 of the way through the season and is getting ready to start the playoffs, the NFL hasn't even started.

Yeah we are all stupid, thank goodness you are here.

The NFL could do a bubble that looks nothing like the NBA. It's an $8B industry. They could literally build a massive bubble in the desert from scratch if they wanted. Or four bubbles. Or whatever.

Yeah you’d think they’d have a bunch of options like that atleast on the table as plane B, C, etc. Even just having teams only travel locally for the regular season or something. But they must have some contingencies in place if the normal schedule and travel plans don’t work out (which is looking kinda possible based on the MLB’s struggles)

You boys and girls hoping a NFL season is coming are going to  be totally let down when it’s cancelled. It’s coming

Pretty sure I’ll be let down if it’s not cancelled.

This season is a money grab dumpster fire and I’m just not one of those people that can see a poo show and just be happy there is anything at all, I don't have the ability to distinguish the difference.

This is more about personal responsibility than anything.  If you don't take the steps you need to to stay clear of the virus you have a chance of catching it.  This is not for athletes it's for everyone.

I have thought for a while baseball players were the dumbest professional athletes.  I have seen an NFL playbook ( from the early 2000's) and you can't be stupid and learn that.  But baseball players?  Hit the ball, run fast and catch it if it is hit to you.  You can be pretty stupid and do that.  Not all of them are that way but way to many of them.

One bad apple spoils the bunch. That is what happened in baseball. A select few teams and players have not taken signs and symptoms seriously and let players play regardless of test results. The Marlins has 2 players this past Friday test positive with no symptoms and let them play anyway. (Completely against the rules) and by Sunday half their team was infected.

The majority of the league seems to be following protocol and has not had any outbreaks. Same goes for the NBA.

The knock on the NFL has been they have not be proactive and have not really shown a detailed plan of how the season is going to play out like the rest of the major sports leagues have. For being the wealthiest league it’s a bad look.

If they do it is all internal. Everything the NFL has done seems focused around bulldozing this through. They will have to fallback at some point it seems.
