INJURY UPDATE: Panthers TE Ian Thomas Currently Out with a Toe Injury

Should be back for the first game but still...

 

Replacing Greg Olsen at tight end is not going to be easy for the Carolina Panthers and now, the guy that is expected to fill in as his replacement, Ian Thomas, is out with an injury.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule briefly provided an update on Thomas' status and the severity of the injury.

"Ian hurt his toe at the end of the last practice. I think they MRI'd it and it was nothing serious, just a hyperextended toe so he should hopefully be back. Depending on how his rehab goes, he should be back here pretty soon."

Should Thomas get back in time for the start of the regular season, he is expected to be the no. 1 tight end on the depth chart. If he is not able to go, Chris Manhertz would be the next guy in line followed by Temarrick Hemingway.

During the first two years of Thomas' career, he has hauled in 52 receptions for 469 yards and three touchdowns.

2.   You don’t need to go very far to find stories of recent NFL players lining up for Toradol, the powerful painkiller they can’t play without. Toradol isn’t a secret; it’s just easier for all involved, from the owners down to the fans, to not think about it. Doing so would entail wrestling with what it means that NFL teams shoot up countless men with a painkiller so powerful it’s used in hospitals to prevent pain after surgery just so they can play.

I’d be happy to shoot up toradol every week for a multi-million dollar salary. Easy decision.

      The Panthers did a great job of countering the Falcons' pass rush in the run game. They utilized veteran wideout David Moore, a good run blocker on the perimeter, as the motion man to help with crack-toss plays and trap blocks. It was also interesting to see more Sean McVay wide zone concepts in Canales’ version, especially with the “insert” concept that is a table in these systems.   Second-year cornerback Chau Smith-Wade didn’t come out of the gates hot, but settled in and put forth a fine performance. His spacing in zone coverage tightened up and it began to have an impact later on—like on his pick-six of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. He also showcased good matching capabilities while having some impressive man reps and tackles in space. You have to appreciate how well Ejiro Evero’s defense rallied to the football. Some runs that would, in the past, go for chunk yardage were contained. Tackling was improved on all three levels of the field. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan was once again the leader in receiving yards (48) on Sunday, but he struggled away from the box score with a couple of drops. As head coach Dave Canales noted Monday afternoon, the Falcons did a great job staying in phases on McMillan, especially at the top of routes. Rookie safety Lathan Ransom showed more flashes of control as a tackler.       I think we would have had a good shot. I believe at the time we had already traded for the first overall pick, so Baltimore could have then immediately get whatever replacement they wanted for Lamar in the draft or trade for someone else. I still am baffled we were one of the teams that put out that ridiculous statement about not pursuing Lamar.   Yeah, let’s not trade for the franchise carrying, mvp winning, all pro top 5 qb in league to help take this franchise higher places. They should have at least tried. They were willing to go all in on Watson but not Lamar, I don’t understand Tepper.
