Play Anticipation

I've watched every down of Panthers football ever played, and I knew exactly what play was coming at the time too. Especially so since they'd already ran the exact play earlier in the game.

It isn't rocket science. Brady/Rhule 100% dropped the ball there.

I am never sure---how often was Armah in the game when he did not get the ball on 4th down?  The reason I thought they knew the play is based on our OL---both tackles had their guys cross their faces inside.  Manhertz was the key---his block drove him inside with such force it basically pancaked Manhertz--our blocking TE.  These guys were not reading--they were not stonewalling the offensive player so the LB could shoot the gap--they knew their front 4 was better than our OL---and they were right.  Still, the all seem to shoot B gap. They gave up C gap and contain.  They knew---or were fairly certain. Regardless, in a fourth and short yardage play, your inside players basically take the FB anyway.  He is the lead blocker before the ball carrier or he is the ball carrier.  If not, there is misdirection, which is not that common, but the LBs sat back--which meant they were probably reading Bridgewater and CMC.  If you showed them the play earlier in the game and it was barely successful on 4th down, I just would not go back to it.  I would run play action off it--and this is not 20/20 hindsight--it is football common sense.

Regardless, with the game on the line in the fourth quarter, the offense should have the advantage because the defense is probably more tired.  The likelihood of beating a tired defender for a yard is better than a pass in most cases---but we did not execute.  I think we gave the play away--an audible, player's eyes, line splits---somehow, we told them what we were doing.

At LSU, the fullback has always been part of the offense, until 2019, when they had a very good one but did not use him as much as they had in the past.  How ironic that Brady would stub his toe on a FB dive.  Furthermore, we ran behind Paradis and our backup LG with our weakest RB.  In the NFL and everywhere else, they call everything about the play, STUPID.

Finally--we needed the end zone.  At no other time would a situation demand man coverage and no LBs to throw over than this one---you play action pass here 99% of the time.  You go for a win, not a yard.

4th and 1 and you can expect a handful of plays. A high majority of them involve a handoff up the middle. It is just statistically a higher probability.

We could have had Teddy take it. We could have ran a PA fake. But both of those aren't guaranteed either, and involve their own risks.

I'll give them a pass because it is week 1 and everyone's new and learning. But if we're still making these kinds of mistakes midseason, it'll be more concerning.

The Raiders already stated they studied LSU, Saints and Baylor before this game. It comes full circle, Brady will have to recognize his tendencies that are being exploited and adjust. I wouldn’t worry to much about it...yet.

It’s even more difficult when you can probably hear a pin drop on the field during the pandemic.

Watched the game and recall the play and announcers discussing it.  I could be wrong, but didn't they also mention that with no crowd noise, the D hears more of the calls/cadence at the line and maybe they heard something they recognized from earlier in the game?
