Several sources say he's currently worth about $4 million.  Nothing compared to what he's earned, but I don't think it qualifies as broke.

I hope Dez gets it together and looks like the guy he could be.  Good on him for having the humility to make a go of it as a PS player and force his way onto the field.

Did you already forget about the panthers signing Trumaine Johnson to the practice squad?

 I believe hes earned around 70 million and been in pro-bowls. Others have listed Dez Byrant and Shacks Harrison, both made more and been to Pro-bowlers too. Besides that teams are getting them in football shape and up-to-date on the playbook. Now you may feel Reid knows the playbook, but most times the new staff uses old terms familiar with the current players. Most times it takes two weeks if it all gos well.

This is a page out of the Colin Kaepernick book. A few teams wanted Colin and willing to pay multi-millions, but if he took a job, it kills his agenda. Then the super important virtual signals lose there meaning. Compete joke.

Hard to judge without knowing the full story. Has he lost his passion for the game after years of feuding with the league and decided a practice squad position on a terrible team isn't worth playing in the middle of a pandemic when he's already made enough money to set him up for life?

Or does he genuinely want to play but thinks a practice squad position is too much of a slap in the face and his ego dictates he can't accept out of principle? The latter is derisible but the former is understandable. While Reid's comments in the past make me suspicous it might be more ego driven, I certainly can't say for sure. I'll withhold judgment unless I know a bit more. I do feel good for Dez and applaud him for not giving up and taking his opportunity, however small, but I don't think it's necessarily fair to directly correlate it with Reid.

Reid probably just looked at the situation and judged that it wasn't the best launching pad for getting back into the league because of the organization and the circumstances. Knowing that he doesn't have to play football every week to put food on the table, he then decided to look around for a better opportunity, knowing full well that it might not come and he might have to scrape by on his existing multimillion-dollar fortune. 

Unless you have terminal F-150 Syndrome, that's both the most likely explanation and perfectly reasonable behavior.

He was ranked 69th of 71 safeties in the NFL by PFF last year

He allowed a passer rating of 149 in coverage last year. A perfect passer rating is 158.3

Boston is awful but Reid is worse

Wasn't Dez in an insane amount of debt already, like ten years ago?

Three different things; defaulting on a $100,000 loan, refusing to pay nearly a million in loans, and then some long drawn out story about jewelry.
