Dane Brugler's First Mock Draft is...surprising

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

As of Sunday

NYJ 0-11  LV, SEA, LAR, CLE, NE  ( I see no wins for this team)

JAX 1-10  MINN, TENN, BALT, CHIC, INDY (might pull an upset but not likely)

CINN 2-8-1 MIA, DAL, PITT, HOU, BALT (without their star rookie QB season is over)  No change

DAL 3-8 BALT, CINN,SF, PHIL, NYG (I think there are two wins maybe 3 especially if week 17 has playoff implications)

LAC 3-8 BUF, NE, ATL. LV, DEN, KC Chargers are kinda like us. In most games until the end and lose   Tough remaining Sched.

PHIL 3-7-1 GB, NO, ARI, DAL, WFT (I honestly don't see another win for Philly

CAR: 4-8 DEN, GB, WAS, NO (Denver's defense is good and if Lock is back, which he should be, this won't be a pushover for us.)

DET, 4-7 CHIC, GB, TENN, TB, MINN Toss-up with CHIC but I only see 1 potential win

NYG 4-7 SEA, ARIZ, CLEV, BALT, DAL (Giants have been playing well, If Jones makes it back soon) There's 2 or 3 wins possibly

WFT 4-7, PITT, SF, SEA, CAR, PHIL (They've got a good defense  could possibly beat everyone but Pittsburgh)

ATL 4-7 NO, LAC, TB, KC, TB (Atlanta could end up 8-8.  They'll beat a Bressless Saints team and TB is playing terrible)

HOU 4-7 INDY, CHIC, INDY, CINN, TENN  I see two possibly 3 more wins for Hou

DEN 4-7 KC, CAR, BUF, LAC, LV  (If Lock returns healthy they'll be competitive in all these games accept KC)

SF 5-6 BUFF, WFT, DAL, ARI, SEA  Niners are getting healthy, they will try to push for a WC spot.

MINN 5-6 JAX, TB, CHIC, NO, DET Minnesota is trending up. They'ff fight for a WC

NE 5-6 LAC, LAR, MIA, BUF, NYJ  NE is hard to figure out They have a chance for all these games except LAR.

I think we start looking at anywhere between 5 and 10

Mahomes was taken 10th (I was screaming for us to take him, we took McCaffrey instead), Rodgers was taken 24th (we picked Thomas Davis) and Brady was picked 199th (yeah I'm not listing who we picked ahead of him).

The game hasn't changed - bad QBs will be picked high. Good QBs will be picked in later rounds by teams that perform good evaluations.

It seems to be, as someone who takes a keen interest in the Draft, that people just want to draft a QB in the first round. Someone they've heard of 'cos he has to be our saviour. Besides Lawrence (who isn't actually as sensational a prospect as many make out), they've all got worrying flaws.

If you are actually going to say Lawrence isn't an amazing prospect then I have to take everything with a grain of salt. He's at the top of every scouting list and if you've watched him, you've seen him make every kind of throw and have solid mobility.

Also, do you actually think every QB taken high is bad and all good QBs are taken later? In the top 11, we have Elway, Aikman, Manning (both), Newton, Luck, Watson, Mahomes, Roethlisberger, Young, Plunkett, Bradshaw as well as "good" QBs like Ryan, Simms, Bledsoe, Palmer, Vick, McNair, Rivers and Stafford and heck even young guys who haven't played long like Burrow, Herbert, Murray, Allen and Goff.

I didn't even list all the other 1st round QBs. We can go round and round on this, but there is absolutely no doubt that taking a QB in the first round (and a couple picks into the 2nd) gives you a much better shot at getting to and/or winning a SB. There aren't that many good QBs taken in later rounds. Wilson, Montana and Brady come once a decade. Good luck finding a franchise QB in later rounds.

The Athletic: Dane Brugler Mock Draft 1.0

(subscription required)

1. New York Jets: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU*
The first curveball of this mock draft. In October, I wrote how Wilson had put himself in the conversation to be the second quarterback drafted and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him selected this high. With his natural accuracy and ability to execute off-platform, Wilson’s play translates very well to the next level.

3. Cincinnati Bengals: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

4. Dallas Cowboys: Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech

5. Los Angeles Chargers: Patrick Surtain, CB, Alabama*

6. Carolina Panthers: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State*
Teddy Bridgewater is a tough, talented quarterback, but I don’t think anybody expects him to be the long-term answer for Carolina. However, he does give the organization an ideal “bridge” scenario if it drafts a quarterback in the top 10. Fields still requires development with his passing vision and reads, but his size, mobility and accuracy are attractive selling points.

Other Notes:

- Trey Lance goes to the WTF at #8.
- New England gets Kyle Pitts
- Several offensive linemen go in the first
- Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is taken by the Saints

Where are the Eagles at?  They are currently picking in front of us.

I would take Justin Fields every day and twice in Sunday if offered.

If we got Fields at 6 it would be the steal of the draft. He’s already probably more accurate than Cam was at any point in his career. Physically I think he holds up better than Lawrence long term. Lawrence is tall but he’s not bulky enough to stave off injury. Fields seems like a good size at 6’4” 230.

Where did they have Trask? I wonder if he'll get more love after the SEC Championship game and the CFB (if Florida gets in).

I still think we're going to have to trade up to grab Fields if he falls below 2. Sewell's great, but the Cowboys and the Chargers are both in spots where they've got multiple needs on defense and I don't think Farley or Surtain are can't-miss, generational prospects that you give up multiple picks for the right to take. This isn't Herbert with performance questions or Tua with a dislocated hip. Fields and Wilson are studs.

We'll probably pick later but either way the key is whether Dallas resigns Dak

Would be happy with him or Wilson. If both are gone then Micah

I've seen a couple of mock drafts that had Dallas saying "the Hell with Dak" and drafting a QB. It's not really a bad move, so I obviously hope they immediately sign Dak to a huge, long-term deal and draft a punter in the first.

I have Wilson ahead of Fields as well.

Where do you have Lance at this point?

Also explain to these people what you don't like about Fields, so many just see the stat sheet and the measurables and automatically think he is one of the top 2 prospects.

I have a feeling that Trevor's team may try to force a trade like Elway or Eli.

If the Jets hire the correct coach and GM the entire narrative changes.  That along with huge amounts of cap space and biggest market in the country it wouldn't take much for him to start liking the Jets.

They are expected to have almost $81m in cap space.

NFL Salary Cap Space | Over The Cap

People need to realize that if there is a reduced salary cap next year, then it will definitely be a buyers market for teams.  A lot of teams are going to have to shed salaries and therefore there are going to be some good players taking some reduced salaries.  $10m next offseason would possible get you the same production as $15m last season.

Just another reason we might end up regretting some of our spending last offseason.

With the right leadership the Jets could be a very quick turnaround.
