Supposing we do draft a quarterback in Round One...

If we pick a QB in the first round, he has to sit until we are certain -- darned certain -- that whatever iteration of O-line we have is capable of giving him a bit of protection. In addition, Teddy has experience and skills to teach, particularly in reading pre-snap formations and when to bug out of the pocket.

There's a lot to be gained by sitting, looking at what we may have on hand going into next season.

Still, if the best LT is still on the board when it comes to our pick (and really, that isn't going to happen) then you grab him and build that offensive line instead of a QB pick.

Make your case for why he should sit for a year while Bridgewater continues to start or why he should start immediately.

It is valid to take into account things like which quarterback we draft and what we do with the offensive line.

I think the talent will be upgraded on the Panthers roster to let him sit a year and learn behind Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater could lead the Panthers to 9-11 wins ala Alex Smiths last year in KC. And with the NFL allowing half the NFL in the Playoffs now, we probably make the Playoffs with the Division being down. Unless people actually believe in Taysom Hill, and a 44-45 year old Tom Brady. LOL.

You need a top 5 NFL roster to have a shot at 9-11 wins with Teddy at QB.

We can afford to keep Moton, and I don't see a major reason to let him go even if he wants a big contract. Paying tackles big money is fine. We've already seen Teddy take a blow to his knees, so I think we're going to pay Moton.

We can take a top QB and improve the o-line in the draft and FA. Now that will severely limit moves we make on defense, but passing the football is more important that anything else in today's NFL.

If I were to draft a QB in the 1st then he's going to hit the ground running, and the o-line would be upgraded enough to protect him within reason. Zach Wilson will probably be available unless we start winning, so for the moment I'd take him.

I'm all for paying a young OT who we've developed. Sure beats the hell out of throwing big money at someone else's bust - which are pretty much the only young OTs who actually hit the market.

Mahomes.

Was going to say the same thing! I do believe that the old school way is the right way pertaining to QBs. Everything is so rushed now! So many QBs are destroyed by getting on the field too soon. A year (or at least a ½-¾ of a year) learning behind a veteran pro doesn't really have many negatives!

Fans and journalists love to say "He'll want big money, so he probably won't be back" but that doesn't take into account a teams blueprint for building and maintaining a roster. We simply don't know how Rhule prioritizes positions, so we don't know which positions are the big money positions on this team with a few exceptions. Obviously we know the QB position can become a big money spot if the play warrants the pay, but what about the other positions? LT is generally a big money position, but how do Rhule and Brady view the RT position? Are they willing to fork over top dollar or not? We don't have a clue. Now we could say with some confidence that Rhule and company will not pay top dollar for a Safety. So it comes down to information that we, and the media, don't have about how our team is built and maintained. The 49ers like a premium o-line from LT to RT. The Bengals are ok with a poop o-line. Rhule is too new for us to know what he is planning, and he is NOT telling the media. FOCK NO. If teams learn of our plans then they will move accordingly to screw us over if possible.

The primary negative to that is in the minds of the fans.

It's my preferred approach too though.

As much as I want a qb this year think we are better off drafting pitts in the first and if a qb we like doesn’t fall to round 2 then o-line lb o-line should be the next several picks and get a qb after we put talent around for the next one to succeed. I don’t know right now it’s all a crap shoot

Or, God forbid, Joe Burrow'd.

Anyone who wants to start him immediately should probably touch on how we prevent that from happening.

You dont prevent QBs from taking shots.  Its just part of the game.  Do the Bengals have an especially bad O-Line?

Ok so this is what you do, this may be kind of long...

1st - This upcoming off-season you do NOT let Moton walk, franchise tag his ass (might be $16M-$17M).  Honestly, just give him what he's asking for, if he's asking for a long term deal of $17M/yr, I don't care, do it...why? Well, apart from the fact that losing him will absolutely hurt us, you can make the money work, by cutting these following players in the upcoming off-season:

  • Kawaan Short next year and getting $9M of cap savings.
  • Stephen Weatherly and getting $6M of cap savings.
  • Michael Palardy and getting $2M of cap savings.

Cutting those 3 players adds up to the $17M that Moton may be asking for, hell, can even give him $18M if that's what he wants, since he's already takes up $1M cap hit, so still not spending any extra.  Cutting these 3 players who have done nothing, and using their money to extend Moton? Easy decision.  For Short, we still have Kerr next year.  For Weatherly, he's done nothing for us this year, so he can be replaced with anybody.  For Michael Palardy, we have Charlton for next 2 years as well.

2nd - You draft a QB in the draft, it's going to be Zach Wilson or Trey Lance.  Whoever you take, you let them sit for the 2021 season, since our O-Line will probably consist of Daley - Cheap FA Guard - Paradis - Cheap FA Guard - Moton

Don't risk your future franchise QB getting hurt (Burrow), just let him learn.

3rd - 2022, this is Teddy's last year in his contract and cutting him saves $21M in cap space.  Also, cutting Tre Boston saves an additional $5M.  Also Matt Paradis' contract would be off the books at this point, an additional $10M in savings.  Total of $36M.

You use that money and SPEND on the O-Line, whether it's a new center, a guard, or a top tier left tackle in free agency, you try to get at least one good offensive lineman in free agency, and whatever you missed out in the offensive line through free agency, you get early in the draft.

If this is followed, our 2022 team could be looking like...

  • QB - Zach Wilson or Trey Lance
  • RB - Christian McCaffrey
  • WR1 - DJ Moore (would be on the 5th year of his rookie deal)
  • WR2 - Robby Anderson (I believe they work something out to re-sign him, also with a lot of dead cap finally being gone)
  • WR3 - I think  Samuel is gone after this year, who knows who'll be WR3 in 2022
  • TE - Also, who knows
  • LT -  TOP TIER FA or EARLY DRAFT PICK
  • LG - Dennis Daley
  • C - TOP TIER FA or EARLY DRAFT PICK
  • RG - FA or MID DRAFT PICK (Guards tend to be better next to a good T, so wouldn't have to invest as much for a guard when Moton is there)
  • RT - Taylor Moton

As for the defense, I won't go into much detail, but with Brian Burns, Derrick Brown, Gross-Matos, Shaq Thompson, Jeremy Chinn, there's already a good young foundation to help the team strongly compete by 2022.  This also isn't factoring the other draft picks that could possibly make impacts in the upcoming draft, like...damn, what if we're able to get another YGM or Chinn in the 2nd round or any late gems.  Anything is possible, but definitely by 2022 this team can be really good.
