Who to Root for (Week 17)

The Carolina Panthers are currently in place to pick 9th in the NFL draft. We are tied with 4 other teams at 5-10 and have a SOS = .529 rankings us behind the Lions (.504) and Giants (.506) but in front of the Broncos (.567).  Given the outcome of this weekend, the Panthers could move as high as 3rd or as low as 15th.  Here are the games that Directly impact our draft position. I am going to assume we lose this weekend, but who the heck knows anymore.

1)      Cowboys @ Giants: If the Giants win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

2)      Vikings @ Lions: If the Lions win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

3)      Redskins @ Eagles: If the Eagles win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

4)      Ravens @ Bengals: If the Bengals win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

5)      Falcons @ Bucs: If the Falcons win this game, we have a tied record, but move ahead of them due to our lower SOS (.529 vs .550)

6)      Titans @ Texans: If the Texans win this game, we have a tied record, but move ahead of them due to our lower SOS (.529 vs .540)

These 6 games directly impact our draft position and could slide us from 9th to 3rd in the draft and completely make up for that meaningless victory last week.

I don't want to go there, but you could've left off the last 10 words and the post would've been perfect! I pied your post anyway, as it's cut-and-dried---clear and concise!

Obviously I would love to see all of them as you suggested to win.  Would make things much easier for us.

1)      Cowboys @ Giants: If the Giants win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

This is a possibility because it is in NY and this is a rivalry.  I don't think the Giants have a chance for the playoffs anymore so they may play less inspired.

2)      Vikings @ Lions: If the Lions win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

Cook being out will give the Lions a shot.  They aren't bad offensively and might surprise the Vikings

3)      Redskins @ Eagles: If the Eagles win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

This will all depend on Heinke.   If he plays well the Redskins defense will limit Philly's offense.

4)      Ravens @ Bengals: If the Bengals win this game, we move ahead of them in the draft order.

Only in my wildest dreams do I think Cincinnati to upset the Ravens.  I'm not 100% sure but a loss here could put Baltimore out of the playoffs.

5)      Falcons @ Bucs: If the Falcons win this game, we have a tied record, but move ahead of them due to our lower SOS (.529 vs .550)

The Bucs are in (I think) So resting Brady might be a good idea.  Atlanta had them in Atlanta but screwed it up.

6)      Titans @ Texans: If the Texans win this game, we have a tied record, but move ahead of them due to our lower SOS (.529 vs .540)

Titans need to win to be in.  They'll win.

Sean "Arseface" Payton will probably do what he has done in the past by encouraging Aints to purposely lose out to hurt us by pushing our draft spot into the teens.

They have an opportunity to be the top seed.  They'll play to win.  They would be more upset if they let this game get away and Chicago pulls the upset.

1) Sunday 1PM

2)  Sunday 1PM

3) Sunday 8:20 PM

4) Sunday 1PM

5) Sunday 1PM

6) Sunday 4:25 PM

I assume that we'll get ATL/Bucs and either Pit/Browns or Bal/Cin on local TV. Makes for an interesting day of football. We should know, basically where we stand before we kick off. Hope Ron shits the bed again!

    • Yea we easily win 6-7 games with Dalton but prefer the way it played out in getting the HC and GM fired
    • Hypothetical offseason question. If the Panthers sat Bryce in 2023 and played Dalton instead, where would the Panthers be going into 2024? One thing is certain, things would be VERY different.  1) Frank Reich doesn’t get fired. Dalton is a veteran and operated Frank’s offense far more effectively in the one game he started than Bryce did. The Panthers likely look a lot more competent early on and Frank doesn’t get fired mid-season. Caveat - It’s also been quietly mentioned in some media outlets that Frank and the staff preferred to draft CJ Stroud and might have tanked the season intentionally to get fired, all speculation. But the vanilla offensive scheme might have been a coincidence due to lack of talent and competence, or perhaps malicious compliance.  2) The Panthers wouldn’t have been the worst team in the NFL. The defense was fairly good in 2023 despite the fact the offense was the worst in the NFL with Young under center. With a veteran starting at QB, the offense would possess the ball for longer periods of time and could have lead to even better performances from the defense.  3) Scott Fitterer doesn’t get fired. A move I think was needed either way, but if the Panthers resembled anything in the way of competency in 2023, Fitterer doesn’t get the axe especially because they hadn’t seen what Bryce can do on the field yet.  4) David Tepper doesn’t throw a drink at a fan. I think we’re all tired of the owner of this franchise embarrassing the fans with his immature behavior but hey, I have to imagine that his rage wouldn’t have been at level 10 if they hadn’t had the disaster of a season they did in 2023. 5) Bryce has a good 2024? Biggest leap I can make in this speculation but I think if Bryce sat in 2024, and the team makes similar moves to build the offense around him, he would come into a much better situation after having a chance to learn on the bench behind a veteran instead of the situation he was thrust into.    We will never know how this would have played out but it is fun to speculate!
