Changing tunes on Moton?

very possible

But he extended CMC 2 years too early--and paid him top dollar...Without that contract, we have plenty of $$ to sign Moton and Sam--and then we could have signed CMC next year...Hurney had no plan, and overpaying RBs was his achilles heel.

I think there is one factor Gantt is not considering----if the cap drops $23m for each team, the free agent market is sure to feature more players teams could not retain.  Less money should result in smaller contracts. So to say, "The cap will be 12% smaller in 2021" and then compare Moton to 2019 contracts is possibly flawed logic.  It is supply and demand.  If Moton's agent understands that less money is out there, he is likely to take a team-friendly deal to avoid going on the market.

And having said that, if we lose Moton, then finding another RT in free agency during the second week or so of free agency should be where you would get a bargain. I think Moton is here---a tag is possible, but a contract should be a priority.   I am not worried about Moton being here for the long term.

So it has begun. What all has been blamed on Hurney since he was fired? I’m serious asking because I missed the first week after he got the axe. Im talking about after Ruhle was hired. Not his previous comedy of errors.

I also thought that Marty being fired might mark a change in the Moton situation.  One thing that made me think we were hesitant to sign him was reports that signing Moton could reset the RT market.  Maybe that is not true, but he won't be the cheapest.

But as noted above, the market has to adjust to the new cap, so while we could sign him to a contract well over 10 mill a year, and make him the highest paid RT of all others signed this year, we could be able to get him for less than 14-15.  Especially if he likes playing for Rhule.

Hard to tell...it's amazing how little media coverage has been given to him by our local guys...is he a hard guy to talk too?  I'd really like to know how he feels.  I can't recall a single interview with him, not even a quick locker room  question.

I was really hoping the narrative on this would shift with Hurney's firing. Retaining Moton should be our #1 in-house priority. Last year's should've been Bradberry and we fuged that up.

Agreed. I was skeptical against paying Bradberry, I think you were for it the whole time. He looks like the real deal in NY. Nice call!

I wanted to re-sign Bradberry and let Shaq walk.

This year I want to re-sign Moton and probably let Samuel walk depending on his market value. We can't spend big money on a #3 WR.

Franchise Moton if we can't come to a deal and try to replace the rest. The OGs should be attainable. I don't know if we can get a good LT or C in this offseason, maybe one will fall into our laps.

yes, but Scott's play allows us to draft one in round 2 or 3 and hopefully develop him.  I think the position to watch is Center (as you mention). If we can find a C in the draft who could start (Creed Humphrey falling to the second round, for example) could not only improve us at C, but he could save us a lot of money. We could cut Paradis who counts $10m against the cap.  We would save (after rookie sale and dead cap are factored it) about $7 million dollars and upgrade the C spot if we cut Paradis (post June 1).  That $$ could be used to keep Samuel here.

Letting Okung walk and cutting KK Short post June 1 (saves about $15m) would clear most of the $$ we need to sign Moton--back load the deal a bit, and we spend no more $$.

So what would that all do?

Negatives:  Create about $8m in dead cap.

Positives:

  • 32-year old center gets 10 years younger
  • LT becomes younger with a veteran (Scott) to hold it down while a draft pick develops.  Scott's salary and a second or third round developing T would cost about $8m less than Okung's deal.
  • Cutting Paradis and Short should enable the Panthers to re-sign Moton and Samuel.

SO YOU LOSE KK SHORT, PARADIS, AND OKUNG (ALL OVER 30) AND YOU REPLACE THEM WITH MOTON, SAMUEL, AND A ROOKIE LT, C, AND RE-SIGNED SCOTT (T).

This means that the first 3 picks in the draft need to be QB, C, and LT.

Sounds awesome, sign me up please. I'm getting closer to QB in the top 10 or trade back. Some of the CBs sound tempting but is the difference between the guys later in the first or 2nd that much different? I would love to be on the right side of a great trade in the draft at some point.

Paradis has been horrible since he got here

KK can’t stay on the field...it may be possible to restructure his deal?

Restructure? He was garbage in the games he played. We should have released him last year instead of wasting $13M on a few tackles and if we don’t this year we are idiots. He’s not the 2015-2018 Short anymore. Kerr outplayed him for the minimum. Release him and be done finally.
