Panthers will work with Trask, Mond and Newman

He has some things to like but I wouldn’t take him until the 4th. He wanted to opt out. That’s what happens. Little films to go buy. I’m not taking him in the 2nd or high 3rd just because of a good combine.

Rounds 3-5 is where I have him.

Newman should be at the Sr. Bowl, so Rhule and Co. will get a close glimpse into a QB that could surprise some folks.

I think if Newman shows up big time during workouts, Sr. Bowl and at the combine, I'd take him with our 3rd rounder. His footwork and consistency/decision making needs work, but he could be Fitterer's Russell Wilson here.

I’m glad they’re getting to work with Newman. It’s a weak Senior Bowl QB class but we’ll see what Newman’s been up to with all his time off

I’d have to imagine Fitterer is going to want someone who shows the ability to throw the deep ball with touch and accuracy

I don't follow Wake Forest very closely, but I recall Sam Hatman being pretty decent this year.

Did he run Newman off?

About these players:  They have the tools.

  • 1. Trask flashed, and had a bad game when half his team opted out.  WRs were dropping passes and he had no chemistry.  How much was Trask getting revealed and how much was Trask not being given a fair platform?  They need to find out.
  • 2. Newman has some mechanical issues but physically, he can do the job.   He is not great under pressure, and he has some issues with deep balls.  He is best when the run game is clicking.  He forces passes to some WRs (Surratt) even when covered.  He would be developmental, and I do not know how much of this was due to the Wake limitations/system.  Many thought he would prosper at UGA.   I personally think he would not have started.  Accuracy and consistency a concern but he is a good runner/athlete.
  • 3. Mond is very similar to Newman, but a bit smaller.  Same problems with consistency.  Good dual threat QB.

Remember, this staff thinks they can win with the merchandise left over after the yard sale--it was what made Rhule famous.  This new eye for bottom-feeding talent is also part of this plan.  Does than mean we will not go after a first round QB? No, but it means that we might not do what we think.

While many of you have already written off Trask, I think he could be a hidden gem.  With some coaching, work on his mechanics, film study x 10, I think he could be a value in the second.

I might be able to live with Trask in the second or third if he drops that far.

If we don't draft a quarterback in the first round though, any local merchant who sells torches and pitchforks is going to have a really good business day.

I am hoarding tar and feathers just in case.

I think this is a good thread to examine other options that could happen, but we don't know.  I thought Seattle was dumb for drafting Wilson.  I thought Mahomes was a wasted pick--and without the right coach/system, he could have been.  Who had Allen as the best QB in that draft (2018, I think)?  We don't know--we have a good team in place that will interview, work out, watch film, etc. these unloved stocks and there could be a diamond in the coal mound.
