The Texans' hand will be forced one way or another, and Watson will get paid by them in dead cap, AND by someone else--top dollar! That's the power of the no-trade clause!

Dead cap money was already paid to him in form of sighing bonus. Dead Cap is only an accounting treatment that applies the bonus to the teams cap over the length of the contract. He won' get paid by both he will just get his normal salary from the new team and any roster or workout bonus.

Everything you said is spot on. The problem arises when the cellar dwellers chime in with  ridiculously inflated offers that we can't remotely match. That's when I hope we will laugh in their face.

Someone will assuredly out bid us. Our only hope is his list of teams will be short. If the Jets or Dolphins are in the mix then we're pretty much out. They have to much fire power.

DeShauns no trade clause gives him control of where he may land. That's why they're looking to him to see where he may allow a trade to happen. It's in his court. Unless he stays.

I'm so tired of the conservative  boring moves this franchise makes. The same moves that have led this team to never having back to back winning seasons.

People saying we can't compete if we trade away assets....we can't compete anyway! Look at the last 4 teams standing, what do they have in common? Elite qbs. Don't have one?...you dont have a shot.

The team isn’t rich in exposable young talent, nor do we have a young qb that could be a good dart throw (like darnold or tua). I just think it’s gonna way too expensive to bring him in. I get it that hes 25 and in his prime, id rather roll the dice with what we get in this draft or get stafford for much cheaper.

Or get Minshew like I’ve been saying and see what party boy can do!

I don't get into the minutiae of these contractual rules, but appreciate the people that do. I learned something!

Not only that, but Fitterer has earned his lunch money scouting mid to later round players and UDFAs! You can't be a scared motherfuger, and the Seahawks, as well as other successful franchises, aren't timid about trades or trading back and somehow still continue to compete year in and out!

No one can make you work if you don't want to!

If you feel lied to and otherwise exploited...you can quit!

The Texans can't force him to do anything either!

Agreed.  No work, no pay, no health care, no retirement accrual, endorsements go away, etc.

Agreed.  Quit and pay stops, health care stops, retirement accrual stops, endorsements go away, etc.

Agreed.  Nor are they obligated to accommodate with a trade.

Folks seem to be ignoring the fact that the Texans are not obligated to trade DW.

If it comes down to dropping the no-trade provision and getting out...

...or having to stay...

...which do you believe DW will choose?

It sounds like you're putting 19th and 20th century antiquated solutions on a pedestal, but there's a better way to do things in this day and age...

Anyway, Watson is already a multi millionaire, who literally has to never work again in life depending on how he manages his money, and will still be able to afford all those things that you mentioned.

The fact is is that he has a modicum of control in this situation whether you like it or not! And, if he decides that he's done playing for the Texans, the trade will happen, and it's going to be to a destination that he wants to go to! That's the bottom line!

Nope, just 2021 contractual law.

You should look into how many NFL players go broke.

Not necessarily.

If they keep him locked up in contractual purgatory, his refusal to play for them, or, worse, play under contentious circumstances that affect and effect the desired results, will bring them to their knees, and they're already pretty low!

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
