We may not be drafting a QB with the 8th pick but maybe later...

It’s way more than that.   If you watch his highlights and not think his arm is special than that’s on you

I don’t judge players based on “highlights” played one decent team and lost to them and he was meh in that game. I’m not saying Wilson can’t be good but let’s stop pretending he’s a sure fire pick.

I appreciate considering all perspectives--and this is probably not an option, but a default fall back.

About the Jets--Saleh has made comments that suggest he is going to give Darnold a running game and some weapons.  He is not ready to get rid of a 24-year old QB.  They may trade back.  They need picks, with needs all over the place (2 WRs, 2-3 OL, TE) if they want to get a good look at Darnold.  There are not many teams that need a QB within reach of the #2 pick--we are probably looking at Top 10 draft picks.  Personally, I think the Jets trade back, to around 8-10 and grab a WR.  Let's just leave it there and analyze the competition for the Jets #2 overall pick.

So what QB-needy teams are capable of moving up within reason?  The Dolphins, but they probably do not take a QB, but they may trade out---who cares if we are looking at the Jets.

The Falcons?  It makes sense for them (with so many needs) to avoid trading up.  They have Ryan and can draft a player more developmental.

The Bengals don't need a QB.

The Eagles (#6) could move up for a QB--but that would mean giving up on 2 Philly QBs.  Not going to do it.

The Lions will give Goff a chance before moving on.  The would be in position to move up for a QB, but why do it this year when you can give Goff a chance and you have the picks to move up in 2022?  I think they address other needs.

So if the Panthers want to avoid all of the risk of being leapfrogged for a QB, and there is a particular QB they seek, I see them giving up #8 #40 and the first rounder in 2022 to move up.

OR they really like Fields, Lance, and Jones, and they will just sit at #8 to see if one or both drop to them.

Probably being greedy here, but the way its laid out, there isn't much competition for that 2nd pick. I would rather keep 40, and offer next years 2nd instead. I believe this years 2nd round has many good options. Things change, but I currently don't see the same depth in next years draft.  I would even be willing to add a later round pick.

I would too.  We might get a fifth rounder as well, if you go by point values, but I would not count on it until the QBs are gone.

Remember, our new GM said there is not a lot of difference between 18 and 40.  40 is our second rounder--

I have been trying to get momentum for packaging a player in with the deal as well--ridding us of a contract--and the player I would deal that they could use is Shaq Thompson.

They have the cap space, and they traded Avery Williamson away last year.

if we were willing to give up the 8th overall pick and then some for Matt Stafford it's a pretty good indicator of what were willing to spend for a QB

There is another way to look at the Panthers going after Stafford...it could mean they don’t like the “Big 4 QB’s” in the draft and thought Stafford was a better option. I don’t think the Panthers trade up in this draft..unless they are completely sold on one of the QB’s. They just got burned on getting Teddy and this mistake cost a lot and will continue to impact the Panthers this season. For the record, I hope the Panthers like one of these young QB’s and they can get him without giving up picks.

More important than an arm is the mind and how fast you can process information. Brady didn't have an incredible arm but was smart as hell. Also, had an amazing coach and a great team around him most of the time. All QBs have decent to great arms or they wouldn't be a starting college QB. And a running QB has a shorter life span. Look at the QBs that play into their late 30's and 40's. Non are running QBs.

this could be said about the league as a whole and may mean the panthers don't need to trade up at all

too far out to really get a sense of that yet

If you like a guy you take him , rhule loves Mac jones expect him at 8 I don’t think we should trade back because 49ers , pats , saints will snatch him .

im fine with him or tre lance , just don’t want fields or Wilson which are terrible running qbs they are not pocket passers they are college system qbs. Mac jones is pro ready same with tre lance

    • I dont think you can fire him either but I do wonder what tepper would do if we dont crack 5 wins.   On the flip side we cannot let Dave pick a qb in the draft if his seat is hot.  Its a conundrum for sure.  One of Teppers makings.
    • Hate to say it but we can't fire DC right now. He was basically forced to work with BY as part of his conditions for being hired and hasn't really had the opportunity to get a QB of his own. That's not a good look when you're interviewing new candidates. A coach has to be given the chance to do his job with players that fit what he does and DC hasn't been given that chance. Fire him and you're putting another box on the list to keep coaches from coming here. Plus, Morgan needs to be given another year as well so he can either show he's can have a successful draft or he's a bust as well so the whole damn show can be flipped and started over with a president of football operations and build from there. No more hold overs. Empty the damn building and start with a brand new staff.
    • It's both column A and column B. Bryce ain't going to make it as an NFL starting QB. At least not here and probably not ever, the physical limitations just can't seem to be overcome consistently. And that's a shame because, well, he's a good kid and I wish it had worked out for him and us. But also, this ain't working out here as a team. We're poorly built from bottom to top. There's no consistency in coaching, there's no team identity, there's no grit, no depth and seemingly little plan or resistance to market influences that get us to buy high and sell low. We have a few guys we call star players that would, well, be starters on other teams, and a crap ton of starters that would be back-ups, bench sitters or free agents outside of this organization. No QB is going to come here and have much success. Much like Rodgers with the Jets, we just don't have fug all for a team. The QB, no matter the pedigree, can't pull us out of the mudhole we have created for ourselves as we've wallowed over the last seven years. No matter how high we draft a QB here, we'd just be planting a seed on rocky soil. It wouldn't survive. Look at Mac Jones and how he has played over three games in San Fran. He was supposed to be a total career washout, another 'Bama Bust. Guy looks like he can handle the game, because he has a well coached, professional team around him. One that has a lot of injured stars, but still fights to win. And you can look at Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, two guys who washed up on our deserted desert island and floundered mightily here. But man, put them on solid teams and they both are living up  to their original draft status. To be perfectly honest, this poo won't change until we, as an organization, change down deep. There has to be a total sea change here. We can't make the owners go away, but we can pressure for them to blow this thing completely up and hire in a handful of consultants, perhaps retired GMs and HCs with winning programs in the N-fuging-FL. Then remake it all. Management, coaching, team, trainers, scouts, even equipment folks. Sorry, I'm tired of this pile of horseshit we call a team. It has just eaten alive the careers of many young athletes and all of us fans since the change in ownership.
