He is not saying that Mac Jones will be a top ten pick. Just that Lance may not be, and Jones may sneak ahead of him.
In reality Lance isn't you typical top ten QB prospect, he is really a mid to late first round QB prospect in most years. He is being pushed up because there are many QB needy teams. Guys like Lance go to teams with established QBs so he can sit for a few years and learn the system. Top ten QBs are typically considered day 1 starters, Lance starting Day 1 would be a disaster. Mac Jones is typically an early day 2 QB, he is not boom or bust. He will either be a good QB day 1 or an eternal Backup.
Why would the Panthers want to give up a tremendous amount of our assets and draft capital (too much) for someone who would pull this kind of stunt? And this would be for someone who would be the face of the franchise.
That’s how I see it but it would be more is a lens to use when looking at players rather than a strict rule. If liked a LB or OL in round 1 or 2, it would be because I felt they were that much better or the risk of underperforming/busting was that much less.
Quenton Nelson is a pretty good example. You don’t take a guard that high... except he is elite and, aside from the injury risk that all players have, there was next to zero risk of him disappointing. You basically hand in the card and get a pro-bowler in return. I’d rather do that then just roll the dice on a CB just because.
