SI Report + Houston NFL reporter of 45 years: It's beyond over for us (Deshaun Watson)

Jets fans, you might want to sit down for this...

John McClain, who has covered the Texans/NFL in Houston for close to five decades, said Wednesday that if Houston trades Deshaun Watson this offseason, it'll be to only one team.

"If they traded him, it would be [to] the Jets," McClain said in an interview with SportsRadio 610 in Houston.

McClain went on to explain that Houston isn't reaching out to other teams regarding a possible trade for their star quarterback. Plus, the organization isn't making Watson available in those conversations when other franchises have inquired over the last several weeks.

"Doesn’t mean they won’t do it eventually, but I guarantee you if they did it, [it] would not be for Carson Wentz and the Eagles,” McClain said.

The veteran reporter recently revealed that he expects Houston's asking price for Watson to be two first-round picks, two additional draft selections and a pair of "young defensive starters, at the least."

If this plugged-in reporter is right, that means Watson won't be moved unless New York blows them away with a package they can't refuse. After all, the Jets are arguably in the best position to make this trade happen with the organization's surplus of draft capital.

Maybe the package that New York hypothetically sends to Houston would feature picks that the Jets end up acquiring in a trade for Sam Darnold. New York has reportedly taken calls about their current quarterback and would certainly look to move him elsewhere if they can get their hands on a player like Watson.

It all comes back to Watson in the end, as the 25-year-old can choose his destination thanks to his no-trade clause. The star is reportedly interested in playing for the Jets, though, so that should end up being the least of New York's worries if they attempt to get this deal done.

Why would you leave the 2nd most dysfunctional franchise in the league to go to the most dysfunctional franchise in the league?

Robert Saleh has a tonnnnnnn of clout in player circles. It was the best pick the Jets could make as HC. Plus Jets are in a much better position than the fuging Texans, who are an evangelical grift at this point. They have decent receivers and a young franchise LT. Adam Gase is just fuging horrible.

Nice post---SPV--I think the second pick is going QB anyway--now I am nearly certain Wilson will be a Texan.  Miami has to be the trading destination, but I would not rule out Watkins totally--until the ink is dry, anything can happen.

It is more than likely that the first 4 picks, via trade or suckage rights, will go for QB--I am fairly certain no QB (fields, wilson, trevor, or lance) gets by #6.

We either sign a free agent (Trubiski, for example) or make a trade (Minshew, Darnold, etc.) or we move up with gusto--and I think we will do the latter.  I expect our first rounder, second rounder, and first next year will be spent moving up.  Thanks Rivera!

I would like to trade up to 5 and take whichever QB falls to us, or Sewell. The price should not be as high as 3 and therefore we'd keep more assets

I have said the same, but I wonder if Cincinnati is not already in love with Sewell and keeping Burrow off the season-ending stretcher ride.  We shall see.

    • lol well that kinda ended up working out in the end, even though I still don't have my jersey yet. Was supposed to ship by tomorrow this time, but just got another email saying it was delayed another 3 weeks and because it's been delayed so long, I had to tell them to keep the order or cancel it, but gave me a 25% off my next order as an apology. Well, my original fear came true and they are now selling the FUSE version (but still not the Blue unfortunately) before the one I ordered was ever shipped. But that's awesome, because I was able to use that coupon to order the FUSE instead and then cancelled the original order.  So I got the jersey I wanted for only $6.30 more than the crappier version costs, and it also says it will be shipped immediately and get here early next week, or 2 weeks before the other was now supposed to be shipped out.
    • I've watched this and think we are well underway.  Believe it or not, Bryce is a big part of this.  The way he bounced back with such grace.  And we've got a lot of young players who want to make their mark, Dave is giving them an opportunity.  I loved our draft.  I like the number of guys we brought in, and they will help build the culture we want under Dave.  We're getting closer, and I think we'll see more wins this year than most of the board. The right culture breeds winning, and winning builds the right culture.  Imho, it's coming.
    • As others have said it's both. One creates the other. But it also takes time sometimes years. And there have been teams lately with new car smell coaching staffs that looked like they were putting it together quickly but things came crashing back down to Earth. Sustainability is the key. For that to happen the meddling of our owners has to stop and they cannot be tempted to return to their ways over any bump in the road either.
