Bear in mind we're spoiled around here.  So accustomed to absolute top notch LB's.

Unfortunately, I don't think we're in a position to get one with our other needs so blatant.  We've got to get off the field on third down.  Our issues were largely just getting guys covered long enough for our pass rush to get home.  Burns and Brown were nightmares for opposing offenses, but our coverage wasn't giving them that extra half second they needed.

We've got to start by getting better coverage on the outside.  Our defense would look a TON better if we could just give our pass runs another half second to second.  A LB just isn't going to do that for us.

I’m on the Jabril Cox or KJ Britt train in the draft. I want to stay away from Pete Werner, dude looked super unathletic at the senior bowl. Britt looked like a stud on the Panthers team and was commanding the huddle during the senior bowl.

FAs I can see us looking at KJ Wright or Matt Milano from Buffalo.

Didn't catch much of the senior bowl but Werner is far from unathletic. He's an above average pass defender and moves well. He's not the type of linebacker who just gets caught looking at a play. Maybe just not his best day, it happens.

This. LBs are luxury items. You need pass rushers, secondary, and some block occupiers in the middle in today's NFL. Honestly, LB is basically a dying position. The modern NFL LB is more akin to the old school SS than it is to the NFL LB of the '80s.

Yeah I mixed up my OSU linebackers. It was Borland I was thinking of.

I'm on that train too.  Britt and Jabril are my favorites.  Jabril was a mega watt star at North Dakota State.  Then he went to LSU and played with the big boys.  Him or Britt would be a nice addition.  As far as free agency Hassan Reddick could bring some pass rush and veteran presence.

I like Z Collins as a hybrid defender. Could probably trade back and get him. Agree LB is a need and draft looks relatively thin for them. Like Cox as well but doubt he would make it to us by rd 3. Also agree CB is a huge need but draft seems deeper for that position. Rest of draft needs to be OL

    • They've gone way overboard with the masking of plays by only filming the ball in air.  Nobody is analyzing camp highlights.
    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
