New coach, same GM.

GM came in 2020, hes new too. No one there drafted Sam Darnold or paid Robby Anderson. Recently Joe Douglas admitted he made a mistake about not re-signing ANderson. Im sure its still floating around goggle.

Yep. It's a very short list of bust QBs that end up bouncing back elsewhere.

It has more to do with the fact we are more comfortable giving up a 2nd for a guy who was an elite prospect 3 years ago than giving up three 1sts for a small school unproven rookie.

Spin it however you like, but the reality is most of this board has had no problem mortgaging the future for a DII prospect in Lance but getting Darnold for a 2nd suddenly means this franchise is stupid.

I am relieved. I think Darnold has at least as good of a chance to succeed as Lance would have but we didn’t have to invest our next 3 years of draft capital to get him. That’s what has us excited.

Darnold has lower body mechanics issues.  When you scramble, they are magnified.  As the Jets were losing, the QB tends to press and try to make things happen.  Playing from behind with no defense is much different than playing with a lead or having a strong defense.

Now lets work on the mechanics and see what we have.  Lets keep him in the game and not send him out to make miracles happen.

I am going out on a limb here and I am going to suggest that we watched some film on him.  I am reaching here, but I think they like the arm and his overall chances for turning it around.  If they are wrong, it is not like they invested $40m guaranteed on him, like they did Teddy---who, by the way, was 5-0 with the Saints in 2019 and looked good....

No he didn't. Outside of a 4 TD game against the worst passing D in football last year, he looked exactly like the pedestrian QB he's always been

Not saying I disagree with you, but why would picking up his option next year have anything to do with Teddy this year?  Also, we can cut Teddy next year for nothing, right?

You are correct, forgot about the third year option thingy.  Still, I think it shows the commitment to Darnold and why would we have Teddy occupy that much cap space this season if he won't be on the field?

I'm neither.

My take right now is just to hope for the best.

But Scot what about my immediate emotional reaction and my hot takes?

What do you mean just hope for the best for my favorite sports team?

That's where I am too. And with Chicago, Denver, Washington, New England all looking for franchise guys, if Lance or Fields is sitting there at 8, then maybe we get 2 1sts and some 2nds from another team. We're so used to Hurney and Gettleman both trying to swing for the fences, it's possible that this FO is playing 4d chess and we just don't know what it looks like.

Now Darnold makes a ton of dumb mistakes and has the Wentz habbit of trying to be Pat M/Arod, and my biggest concern is his pre snap reading ability, but there's far more capable people than me that have pointed out how bad consistently fuging bad the Jets playcalling was and how routinely his weapons let him down.

If he's coachable and shows improvement I'll be happy. Much like Wentz though it was a perfect storm of bullshit.

Look good

I see this as on piece of the puzzle. We are going to bring in someone else, maybe a rookie, and Darnold could lost the job if he sucks.  If I thought Darnold was the answer, I would be concerned, but he is part of the solution.

    • Give me Anthony Hill Jr or give me death
    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
