Me personally, my initial reaction is I definitely don't like it, and that it makes it easier to see who's who on the field based on their numbers. But I get that eventually, with teams retiring numbers, that eventually they'll run out at certain positions, so maybe it's inevitable. Still don't like it, but that's how I feel.

What about you?

This is why I'm not a fan of retiring numbers. Eventually you'll run out.

I think retiring numbers should only be done rarely, like Jerry Rice or Tom Brady.  Truly GOATs at their position and not only franchise legends, but legends to the sport.  It’s a respect thing.

I like the number change.  I don’t “love” it, but I think it’s cool.  Gonna be seeing a lot more WR with those single digits.  Admittedly I love WR numbers in the 80s and it seems like they’ve been going more into the teens lately, but at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter.

Personally, I like how European soccer clubs treat their numbers. Some numbers have a lot more weight than others (like 1, 59, or 89 etc. would for the Panthers) and the expectation is that if you're given a number with higher significance, then your level of play needs to match that. It's like a higher responsibility out of respect for those who have worn that number previously.

I like that.  I don’t follow soccer at all so I didn’t realize that.  Seems like an unspoken, unofficial way to respect the previous ballers and let people know you expect great things from yourself.  I do find it interesting that I don’t think anyone has taken 89 since Smith left.  It’ll probably be the same for 59 and 1.  Whoever gets those will have high expectations.

Personally, I'd limit QBs, Ks, and Ps to numbers below 20.  Since they are treated like they are made of glass, their numbers should be more recognizable.  Otherwise, I'm not sure I care.

If the NFL is spending their rule-changing efforts on numbers, they can't be effing up any of the other rules.  That is a good thing, IMO.
