I'm very much on board with the ones not playing tomorrow.

The OL has been in constant flux it sounds and putting Sam behind whatever patchwork unit they march out there is not a recipe for success. Plus, depth is a real concern with a roster going through the type of churn that the Panthers' has. Injuries will happen, so there has to be quality depth in case somebody goes down. Look at how the offense suffered when CMC went down and how much the deep passing attempts tapered off after Teddy's knee injury. Combine that with lackluster OL play and well... there's three reasons right there why they weren't winning any shootouts.

I'm especially excited to check out the competition at WR, DB, and the DL.

Plus, this means we should see Tommy Tremble 👀

I'll have my eyes locked on Christianson, Tremble, and Terrace.

The joint practices are much better than playing a series or three in a preseason game. On these practices you see film after you play and can go up against the same guys the next  day to correct it.  After games you either don't get a chance to play them again or have to wait weeks or months for a second chance. Hence the reason that playing a series or two in a preseason game is highly over-rated.

This could make a difference or it could make no difference none of us can know. Do I think it is the end of the world or our season is doomed? Of course not. But on the surface for a team that hasn't been near the top of the division in several years it does give me vibes of the just happy to be here mentality that has held us back. This is a team with one of the youngest rosters in the league and despite our hope and support a young unproven college coach. I hope the fellas ball tf out in September. We'll see.

There's already a week off between preseason and regular seaaon.

He didn't say it was to give them a game off. He said it was to look at the non starters because they have cuts on Tuesday.

Does anybody listen to interviews or read the articles?

The folks who fear the worse, or are negatively inclined, don't listen to anything they don't want to hear.

The coaches also have more control over the situations (down & distance, red zone, 2 minute, player X versus player Y) that they want to get reps in the joint practice. In the preseason game, the coaches just have to deal with whatever situations present themselves.

Excellent point. This needs to be a Topic Starter. Let folks know what actually goes on. Maybe they will see the difference between a Scrimmage, and a Pre Season game.

Last year was all screwed up because of COVID, especially preseason, but the first 3 weeks of the regular season had some of the worst NFL football from all 32 teams that I've ever watched. A lot of offside, presnap penalties, db illegal contact penalties, dropped balls, etc. Those are the type of things starters miss when they don't play in preseason games. We may be looking at a rough first 3 weeks again this year.

Exactly. Throw in the chance for injuries increase. Coaches have to walk a fine line on these. How much does my team need? Can we do it without throwing them out in a meaningless preseason game?

Fans can rail against starters not playing. But Rhule has to balance team building against the chance of injury.

A preseason game is just a game that doesn’t mean anything.   But it is a game.  It isn’t drills or practice.   Game rules apply.  So do the consequences when you mess up.  You don’t get redos.

Dalton out there for the Bears.  Tua out here for the Phins.

Only guys not playing are successful vets on returning offenses.  This is just Matt Rhule being green.  Which he is.  It’s like Teddy pointing out the red zone practice issues.

NFL coaches are getting guys like Sam reps

You're right, we're doomed.  This is going to ruin the season. Teddy the great was paired with a green idiot coach and was trying to carry them.  I guess we should have kept Teddy and got a new coaching staff.

You guys are carrying your butthurt over Fields into every thing the team does.  I wish you Fields worshipers would let it go but I know you won't.

Who said we are doomed lol.   But that is the general response by some when people discuss anything about Rhule that isn’t projecting sunshine and rainbows.

Fields has nothing to do with this sort of conversation.  Which is why I have had them about Rhule before the draft and back into last year

    • If Mays has a market, which it seems he will, he's gone.  I think we bring back Nijman for too much money to be cautious at LT, Corbett comes back cheap since he's already said he wants to live in CLT, and Christensen eventually gets re-signed with the hopes he can be depth at some point.  Draft an OT, draft a C. The OL might be rough for stretches next year, but time to get some youth there to prepare for Bryce in 2027 or the next QB. I still think we compete for the division in 2026 and can go back to the playoffs unlike the oddsmakers in Vegas, but the *real* year is 2027 IMO. Either Bryce has proven it and he's the QB looking at his 2nd contract, or we have the ready-made team for the next rookie QB or Vet we trade for.
    • The Panthers are going to have a lot more flexibility in free agency than it looks like at first glance. On paper, the cap space might seem tight, but there are several obvious restructure candidates that could easily free up significant room. Between converting base salaries into signing bonuses and spreading cap hits out over future years, Carolina could realistically clear $60–80 million in additional space if they wanted to be aggressive. That kind of flexibility means they’re not stuck. They can extend key young pieces, add help along the offensive line, upgrade the defense, and still be strategic about value signings. Letting Cade Mays test the market makes sense from a leverage standpoint. If he’s willing to come back on a team-friendly deal, great, continuity on the line matters. But if his market price climbs, the Panthers should absolutely explore upgrades. The point is, this front office isn’t boxed in. With cap maneuvering and smart structuring, they have the ability to be active players in free agency rather than sitting on the sidelines like we are used too.
