If the Jaguars are showcasing Gardner Minshew, plenty of teams should be interested

Minshew MAY be better than Darnold.

But if he is, he still doesn't seem like he's likely to be good enough to be a franchise kind of QB.

He also may not be.  The bet on Darnold is about potential, not play so far, and it's hard to argue Minshew has more potential than Darnold.

I'd rather fail with Darnold than suffer with Minshew, now that he's our QB.  And if Darnold is as bad as some fear, he might just help us get our next QB.

That's the thing. We know Minshew can play well in the NFL because he has. Darnold's instances of competent NFL play have been pretty limited. But Darnold clearly has a higher ceiling than Minshew, although a far lower floor.

Minshew is an attractive option for us because there is no Plan B in 2021 if Darnold shits the bed. That said, I don't think the odds of him being our answer for this future would be very high. He's just a reasonable solution to a potential 2021 problem.

All joking aside, what's the bull case for Darnold having a "higher ceiling" than Minshew?

Is it simply based on their respective draft positions?  (Sam #3, Minshew 6th round)

Darnold has 38 starts with 45 TD's and 39 INT's.

The Swashbuckler projects at 70 TD's and 21 INT's over course of 38 starts

(he has 20 starts w/ 37 TD's and 11 INT's).

I don't think worst case scenario is Darnold isn't competent and we have a bad season. I think worst case is a season in which we win enough games to be out of position to have our pick of a few QBs and we still don't have an answer at QB because of whomever played not being the answer .

But I agree backup qb seems a big problem overall .  I'm all in for Darnold now.  I would like a veteran backup on waivers, but Minshew isn't that.  If he really would be totally dirt cheap then maybe, but I don't want to invest more draft capital in long shots after Darnold.

As to the potential, that relates to physical strengths. Minshew isn't terrible in those regards, and has played a lot better than Darnold mostly, but he really isn't physically gifted and while it's certainly early enough for us to be wrong, he just doesn't seem like he's a long term solution at QB.

the bar is what we have.

Minshew has been better in the NFL than Darnold.  I don't buy an arguement that Darnold has a higher ceiling either.

I mean, we aren't getting Minshew.   But if all things we even and you got the option to pick one....Minshew is the better gamble.  But if gambling on one is all your actual plan is....well, that remains a bad plan.

Minshew was pretty good but we just spent two seasons complaining about QBs without sufficient arm strength.  Yes, Teddy had issues going deep beyond that, but Minshew doesn't have anything close to Darnold's arm.  There was some debate about this pre draft... And I was surprised when I did some digging into their advanced stats now much closer Minshew and Teddy were than I expected in terms of depth of targets and what not.  But Minshew 'feels' in game situations more willing to take risks than Teddy did.

Plus, Minshew had pretty much the same percent of bad throws as Darnold, far fewer drops, about the same percent of on target passes, and a couple yards less depth to his average attempt thru each of their first two years.  Now I agree advanced stats can be misleading, and Minshew did play better with a better cast around him.  A much better one lol

I don't see where the Panthers have the resources to make a competitive offer to the Jaguars. I wouldn't want to give up a 1st for Minshew, who would hopefully be a backup QB, and we don't have a second round (or a fourth round) pick. Those belong to the Jets after the Darnold trade.

In the hypothetical situation where Minshew became a Panther, does anyone here really believe that Rhule would play Minshew over Sam after the Panthers gave up a good deal to get him(Darnold)?

QB Competition?  LOL.   That's a good one.   😁

Let's be honest with ourselves....In Rhule's eyes, there wouldn't be a competition except at Backup where Minshew would easily beat out PJ.

He's hitched his Wagon to Sam for all intents and purposes.

Let's see if that Wagon gets to its desired destination.

A risk taker with a sub par arm? Sounds like the opposite of what most were pining for. This is not a guy to trade for other than a very late rounder to be a backup.  That's not going to happen.

To start with, Minshew’s arm strength is substandard for an NFL quarterback. That’s part of the reason he was drafted in the sixth round despite having a phenomenal senior season at Washington State. It is an unfortunate fact of life for NFL quarterbacks that arm strength is something that truly great players cannot do without. There is a certain point at which a player’s arm is simply too weak for them to be an elite quarterback. Now, Minshew’s arm isn’t quite that poor, but it is undeniably below the level of the NFL’s best players at the position.

Due to the limitations of his arm strength and modest mobility, Minshew is unlikely to be a true game-changer. The deep passing, tight-window skills, and dual-threat capabilities required to be a legitimate game-changer may not ever be there with Minshew. Last weekend's game did not give him much of a chance to prove any developments in those areas, either.

Honestly, I don't want a Plan B if Darnold sh*ts the bed this year. Minshew would keep us in draft purgatory. If Darnold is truly a bust then let him get us a high draft pick.

Darnold does have top tier arm talent and some ability to make something out of nothing. More than Minshew, IMO.

Don't get me wrong, Minshew has been leaps and bounds a better NFL QB to date but the top end for Darnold is actually high.

    • They made sure to not give him any competition at QB with that lame ass UDFA selection. I swear they pick the tallest shittiest qb's in camp to make it look like height is not the problem lol
