Speculating the Final 53

It's a slow day, it's taking forever for them to release our cuts (as of when I started this post), practice is delayed to 2:45pm est, and now there's a Tornado Warning in Spartanburg, so I say why not.

Offense - 25 Total

QB (2) - Sam Darnold / PJ Walker - I think we ultimately release Grier or move him for a 6th or 7th round conditional pick, with it being a 17 game season that extra spot is better suited elsewhere, and if we lose two QB's anyway it doesn't matter. I think we add a body to the PS however.

HB (3) - Christian McCaffrey / Chuba Hubbard / Trenton Cannon  -- I think we try to get Rodney Smith pack to the PS, Cannon is our KR / Gunner so he sticks.

FB (1) - Rod Smith

T (5) - Cam Erving / Taylor Moton - Greg Little / Brady Christensen / FA TBD -- I don't see Scott making the team, and 2nd round investment / depth sees Little survive

C / G (5) - Matt Pardis / Pat Elflein /  John Miller -- Dennis Daley / Deonte Brown

TE (3) - Dan Arnold / Tommy Tremble / Ian Thomas -- I think we are locked in on this, I don't see Sullivan making a push

WR (6) - DJ Moore / Robbie Anderson / Terrace Marshall Jr - David Moore / Brandon Zylstra / Shi Smith

______________________________

Defense - 25 Total

DE (4) - Brian Burns / Morgan Fox -- Yetur Gross-Matos / Marquise Haynes --  Christian Miller to the PS

IDL (4) - Derrick Brown / Daquan Jones -- Bravvion Roy / Daviyon Nixon - Hoskins to the PS

OLB (4) - Shaq Thompson / Haason Reddick -- Frankie Luvu / Julian Stanford

ILB (3) - Denzell Perryman / Jermaine Carter -- FA TBD, Josh Bynes was not impressive, looked slow and missed several tackles, turning 32

CB (6) - Donte Jackson / Jaycee Horn / AJ Bouye -- Rashaan Melvin / Keith Taylor / STO III -- Pride to IR

S (4) - Jeremy Chinn / Juston Burriss -- Kenny Robinson / Sam Franklin -- I think we will try to get Hartsfield onto the PS.

ST's - 3

K - Joey Slye

P - Joseph Charlton

LS - Fletcher -- It sucks but I think this is where we say goodbye to JJ

  • Thompson would be the TE making it over Thomas methinks
  • Safety projections check out
  • I think we end up just cutting Perryman, it's only $2.9 mil guaranteed, virtually nothing towards 2022
  • I see us carrying 7 WRs w/ Brady's offense bringing in Bayless, R. Smith would then be a cut

I think Thompson is a safe bet to make the roster. He actually played well for us in spurts last season.

You could be right, but I don't think so personally b/c for all his flaws, Ian Thomas is light years more talented than Colin Thompson.

I doubt Thomas is resigned after this year, but I would be shocked if the coaching staff cut Thomas.

He didn't even play against the Colts, which makes me think Thomas is considered enough of a "starter" that his roster spot is in jeopardy.  Ian Thomas is a physical specimen, and those don't grow on trees.

I'm not saying Ian Thomas is the guy, but Colin Thompson was on the roster last year b/c we lacked talent, not b/c he should be on an accomplished NFL roster

Smith WAS a cut. Also, I think Cannon is our WR7. I still have Chandler making the team as a 5th safety. He's having a strong preseason.

Well there we go! ha.

WR chart for me:

DJ Moore, Robbie Anderson, Terrace Marshall, David Moore, Shi Smith, Brandon Zylstra, Omar Bayless

*Maybe CJ Saunders.  The 6-7th WR spot is going to be a fun one to see go down. I honestly like them all.

I have DJ, Anderson, Marshall, David Moore, Shi, Zylstra; in that order.

Bayless makes PS if he clears waivers. As does Saunders.

Cannon becomes our WR7, RB4, ST ace, all around good guy.

Thompson is worlds better than Thomas.

    • So we have a pretty tough schedule for the remainder of the season.  I believe I saw where it's the toughest remaining schedule in the league.  To even think about the playoffs we IMO have to, at minimum, win three of the remaining six.  49ers - We will have to play an amazing game to win this one.  We are down to backups at LB (at least for now) and Kittle is probably going to have a big day.  CMC must not go off on us.  PFF had a pregame analysis and actually the two guys running the show were split on who wins.  They even said it was disrespectful to the Panthers to be 7pt underdog.  Evero is going to have to have a great gameplan.   I'm on the fence but this game is in SF and I think we lose. Rams - We're at home that is about the only advantage I see in this game.  LA is one of the best offenses in the league and I just don't think we have the firepower to beat them.  The only way we win is if we can control the clock and keep LA's offense off the field. Saints - We have to go into this game on a mission.  WE HAVE TO WIN THIS GAME.  Hopefully, Canales has a better gameplan and we win.  This is a very winnable game. TB x 2 - The only chance, IMO, of winning the NFCS is we have to win both games.  Many talking heads say TB is faltering some and can be had.  By week 15 and 17 we should be hitting on all cylinders.  If we win, it's going to have to be a pretty mistake free. Seahawks - they have a very tough defense, and I think we get shut down.  Our only hope is to pressure Darnold into mistakes like he did this past weekend with 4 INTs.  As with the Rams we are going to have to keep this a low scoring game. My hope is  49ers- Win Rams - Loss Saints - Win Bucs@Home - Win Seattle - Loss Bucs@TB - Loss 9-8 Record My Fear 49ers-Loss Rams-Loss Saints-Win Bucs@home - Loss Seahawks - Loss Bucs@TB - Loss 7-10 record
    • With Motons deal (stupid), Hunt, Lewis and Mayes and Icky upcoming our line is going to be the most expensive again in the nfl.   Its going to be an interesting snap shot if this type of team building works.
    • We have an easy out after this season with marginal dead cap. Could be smart given the situation and RB landscape.  This part isn’t at you—but in general: None of these guys are world beaters — sure they have been great for us at times but I just hope we don’t get this emotional investment paired with financials. I don’t think we need to teget all antsy about keeping Dowdle when he’ll be 28 next year. I don’t mind just continuously taking a stab in the late rounds every year on one.  We should not be investing in one guy in particular when they’re not really a game breaker. See: Sanders, Hubbard, etc.  I’d say heck yes, take a shot at a guy high up if you’re convinced you’ve landed a Gibbs or Taylor level, but otherwise, don’t invest, don’t get emotional about a 3-4 game stretch. Reset and see what type of committee you can construct with fresh legs.
