Sam Darnold Thoughts After Game 1

Overall I think he was impressive.  I think in the 2nd half he missed a couple of throws that may have put some pressure on him but after NYJ go their first score Darnold marched the Panthers down to scoring postion and got us up by 2 scores again.

Gotta get that O-line in shape though.

He was a warrior standing in the pocket and making throws at the last moment.  I was overhall happy with his preformance.

Looked mostly like a pretty savvy vet out there.  Cool.  Calm. Collected.

Good arm strength.

Accuracy was a bit off but I think that will come through with more reps & gametime.

All in all a fine first game.

Loved that QB draw.  Don't know if that decision was his or Brady's with no Safety deep.  But that's what good teams do - make the D pay for their mistakes.

low tier game manager, but at least he's only being paid like one

can you explain this take? the way he took hits, bounced back from mistakes, demonstrated significant arm strength, etc... didn't strike me as a game manager.

it is true our offensive philosophy is dink and dunkish, but that's partly because of the atrocity that is the OL.

Playcalling was very up and down.

Brady needs to adjust.  It was obvious that Salah made some defensive changes at halftime and Brady didn't seem to adjust.  His best play was the misdirection with DJ Moore which is something I think they should have done more of.  Get that defense second guessing again.

They obviously were targeting CMC.  We have other weapons and Brady IMO didn't use them enough.

I agree.  Somehow, Moore had 80 yards receiving, but it felt like he wasn't being utilized enough.  Robby had that one deep bomb... Just need to get these WRs more involved in the game somehow.  The one 2nd half drive that yielded points saw a lot of nice efforts to get WRs the ball in space.

    • Joe Person   @josephperson · 16m     Panthers become the 1st team this yr with 5 weekly winners: Rico Dowdle, Ryan Fitzgerald, Sam Martin, Tre'von Moehrig and Bryce. Panthers last did that in 2017: Cam Newton, Julius Peppers, Luke Kuechly, Jonathan Stewart and Damiere Byrd.
    • Gotta wonder if Smitty's brain has turned to mush with how hard he played in the NFL
    • OK, fair enough--however, since my point was that drafting a QB in the top 10 is stupid, if you consider the players who were not drafted in the top 10 or those who WERE drafted in the top 10 and did not secure starting positions with the team that drafted them, you should see the point.  Is it smart to draft a QB in the top 10 when only 4 are still starting for the team that drafted them.  Next, consider that half of that number, 2, were drafted outside the first round.  Next, there are 4 (Goff, Mayfield, Jones, and Darnold) who are starting on other teams after busting.   That number could increase as Arizona seems ready to move on from Murray, Miami is not sold on Tua, and jacksonville is still waiting for Trevor to start looking elite.  Bryce?   So to answer your question, there are MANY more QBs in the NFL who have busted and become starters on other rosters, were drafted after day 1, or are still on the cusp than the four who have become elite.  I thought that point was made.
