Matt Rhule being as honest as it will get

All I know is, the o line was the best it’s been all year and I don’t recall seeing a deep pass. I might’ve missed one or two.

The run game seemed to click, but where was the play action? Again, where was the deep passes and completions?

Defense balled out.

After that, we only scored 19 points? What’s the problem? What is going on? This ain’t gone cut it against actual good teams, because I promise you we not holding Tampa to 13. We’re going to need to put up 30/40 points, and this offense can’t do that

We won't beat NE running the ball this week. Bill always takes away what you do best. We will have to win this passing the ball as well as running.

It's going to take a tremendous defensive effort to best New England and luckily we have a rookie QB we are facing. Think about all the talking heads and analysts that keep saying how predictable we are on offense. Boy if that isn't tailor made for Belichick to roast us.

My assessment of him coming out of college was his [Darnold] ceiling was a bottom third starter at best.  After seeing him further now as our starter, he is not even that.  His ceiling is NFL backup, and even that is questionable because he is much more likely to lose you a game than he is to manage one and win it.

Yeah, I am trending that way too. He just seems so lost on the field for most of the game and then there will be a handful of plays that make you scratch your head and say, "Why the fug can't he just do that all the time?" That really screams NFL backup and not starting QB. Honestly, it probably would help him to be holding a clipboard for a few years. He might eventually become a halfway decent backup QB if he has the time to learn and develop without any of the actual pressure to play regularly.

I think we had 3 pass attempts over 20 yards. 1 completion. Need to do better for sure.

I think you're pretty spot on here. There is some potential in the rookies, but also some meh.

If they don't land Watson, I think they go all in on Howell in the draft instead of trading down or going Oline in the first. There will be pressure to improve the QB position again and Tepper will be able to sell a lot of overpriced tickets, merch, and beer to UNC homers.

Oof. If we go on in on Howell, it will all just end in tears again, IMO. Howell has some talent but he is a big project with a lot of flaws that need to be coached out. Not anything near a day one starter, IMO.

I don't like much of this 2022 QB draft class, which makes the future at QB seem so much more bleak for us. IMO, it will be journeyman QB in 2022. Just because that will be all that is reasonably available and overdrafting a QB is a path to the ultimate failure.

The real fun is going to be how involved Tepper becomes in forcing a QB on the team.

I'm not sure if Howell can be a day one starter or not. Odds are if he's drafted, we'll find out the hard way though.

If it's true that Tepper wanted Fields and if Fields has a fairly good season, I think we'll see Tepper add a lot of pressure to draft a QB and the home state kid makes a lot of business sense even if he doesn't end up good at all. I think Tepper, like JR before him, cares more about his bottom line more than putting a winning team on the field. And Howell is an easy sell to a sizable part of the NC population.

Now that I think about it we also tried to throw into the endzone later in the game as well but the OL collapsed before Sam had a chance to read anything and he threw it out the back of the endzone, anxiously awaiting your response, but I know you are going to disappear again.

At first I thought this was a terrible play design by Brady. Now that I’ve gone back and re watched the play you’re talking about, I truly have no idea what in the actual f*ck Tommy Tremble was doing.

It was actually a good play design by Brady. Darnold had two in breaking routes in the middle of the field and just had to pick whichever one was open. For whatever reason and I truly have no idea why… Tremble decided to stop on his shallow cross and cut up right into DJ who put Harris on the turf and would’ve had the easiest touchdown of his life

This play was entirely Tremble’s fault

The beauty of yesterday though was the the playaction did work for the first time in a long time.  Those bootlegs worked better than they had since possibly ever this season.  The defense started selling out to stop the run on the PA...  problem is, Sam is scared to throw.  As TheRumGone just illustrated with the pocket time and air yards stats, he doesn't trust what he's seeing in front of him, and thus, he just doesn't pull the trigger or he pulls it extremely late, which is also why it's not a coincidence we have receivers getting laid out and injured every week.  He doesn't anticipate anything except being hit.  The issue I had with him coming out of college is the same issue he has now - it doesn't matter how "sneaky athletic" he is, or if he has all the arm talent in the world, if he can't process what he's seeing, if he can't progress through his reads, and he can't be decisive and anticipate what read will be open based off what the defense is giving him, then everything else is worthless.  And that is his problem.  His processing part of his game is his fatal flaw, and it doesn't matter how much coaching or opportunities he gets, the sample size dating back to college is there, and it indicates he can't read a defense.  It's also why he's so inconsistent and has flashes of incredible throws (like the 4th down pass to Ian Thomas a couple weeks ago), but he can't sustain it because you can occasionally guess correctly, but more often than not, you won't.

It's why this offense is so hard to watch.  Look at how many plays yesterday Sam scrambled out of the pocket and instead of, like elite QBs, buying time to throw it downfield, he takes off like a chicken with his head cut off because he is scared to throw it.  Brady has made some dumb calls, but it's hard imagining just how limited he is because of what he can and can't call based off the stuff Sam can't do and/or is missing every pass play.

Matt  " Ron Fox " Rhule it is then....

I mean they spent all the 2020 draft picks on D, many of the higher cost FA signees were on the D side. About half this years picks and the 8th overall used on D. So it should not surprise anyone thats their strength. Plus Phil Snow >>> Joke Brady.

I don't think Tepper cares at all about the home state thing. That was a JR trait. Not to mention, Howell isn't going to bring many new fans to the fanbase, if any at all.

I agree on Fields, though. If he somehow turns it on over the last half of the season, Tepper is going to get "aggressively involved" in the 2022 QB decision, IMO. For better or worse.

I wouldn't say Fields is having a good season, but yesterday was his best day yet (ironically the day without Nagy there).

But wow this play reminded me of a QB we used to in Carolina.

    • Am I reading this right? We've had awful QB play for over half a decade...and we'd pass on Dak because he has no "clutch gene" or can't get it done in the playoffs--something we haven't sniffed and have no reason to believe we will for years to come?!? Sorry, but this sounds like a starving man turning down a box of crackers because they're Great Value instead of Ritz. If a Great Value QB is available when you have none, there is no deliberation needed.
