I don't know that there are many, if any, sports reporters that would be willing to write this article and expect to remain on friendly terms w/the Panthers organization.  That is, unless someone within the Panthers organization has encouraged Person to write/publish it.

If that is the case, it may indicate the Panthers public relations people are laying the groundwork for a decision that has already been made, Rhule's firing.

That's how I'm interpreting it as well.

The Darnold deal is only a one year mistake.  As unpleasant as it is, I can live with that.

If dead man walking Rhule does something crazy like trade 3 first round picks for Deshaun Watson, the franchise is screwed.

Exactly.  Thank god it was only a 1-year mistake.

But if the latter happens, holy sh*t.....

If all this is true (which I think it likely is) then Rhule needs to immediately lose all personnel control.   No trading players or drafting guys in 2022 to save his skin.  The long term interests of the team need to take precedence over Rhule's desperation to keep his job.

Best comment in this thread. He needs to coach his way out of the hole he created without any further damage. That’s if he can, which isn’t likely. He would need to hire new offensive and defensive cords. I know the defensive coordinator idea isn’t as popular but I thunk we can do better.

That doesn’t add up to the conclusion that he should return unless tepper just don’t want to saddle the new coach with Sam as his QB.

I think it’s that, and a lot of Rhule’s mistakes would be off the books by then, and the new coach would actually have a draft.

Rhule already set next year up for failure, Bad new contracts, no draft picks, not a lot of salary cap. Thankfully after next season as long as they don’t do anything stupid this year we should be sitting pretty.

what we need to do this year is focus on keeping a few key starters and focus on the O-line. Chances are we will suck next year so would be nice actually having our draft picks too

The thing is that the “complete control” of the head coach is likely contractual and not a hand-shake agreement.  Ergo, there’s only ONE way to ensure that Rhule doesn’t mortgage more of the organization's future to save his own skin: fire him and eat the contract before he has the opportunity.

Yet, Rhule is set to return in 2022.

The Athletic's Joseph Person reports Panthers owner David Tepper is "unhappy and embarrassed" by the team's performance under head coach Matt Rhule.

Rhule, who has lost 21 of his 31 games as Carolina's head coach, said this week that Tepper has “nothing but confidence about me and the future and moving forward." Often citing "the process," Rhule has preached patience with his underperforming Panthers, who have flailed wildly over the past year in search of a franchise quarterback. They inexplicably settled on Sam Darnold before the 2021 NFL Draft, only to see him flounder after a promising start to the season. Panthers players have reportedly grown deeply skeptical of Rhule's "process," criticizing his micromanaging approach to coaching. “The proof’s in the pudding,” said one veteran personnel official. “The product on the field is bad.” Expect 2022 to be Rhule's final year as Carolina's head coach barring a miraculous turnaround.

Don't see anything about "losing the locker room" in there.

This "locker room is lost" assertion keeps getting tossed out there but there's no evidence as such...

...in fact, the alpha dog came out in support of Coach Rhule:

    • there is one common denominator in the 2003 & 2015 Carolina Panthers teams they both had ELITE top tier Qb play.  it would require a MVP type of season from Bryce Young to have the same type of success that Jake Delhomme had in  2003 & or Cam Newton in 2015 & lead this team to a SuperBowl is this going to happen or is there any reason to believe Bryce Young is capable of playing similar to Jake Delhomme in 2003 or Cam Newton in 2015 ? well no there is no absolutely NO reason whatsoever to believe that this is going to happen in 2026 ..just saying
    • I'd actually like to see Cherelus get a fair shot to win the job in camp. Wallace is decent in drop zone coverage, but he gets abused in the play action game and is often times out of position in the run game. It might just be me, but I swear every time I watch Wallace play, I see multiple plays a game were it looks like he's just trying to be blocked. Watching Cherelus last year he at least looked like he was trying to hit someone on every play. Wallace plays like a LB who doesn't trust what he sees and it makes him passive and cautious versus Cherelus who regardless of if his decision is right or wrong goes at it 100%.
    • Agreed.  Hasn’t happened to me either, but I feel very strongly about it.  That’s not just one of the worst things a woman could do to a man, it’s a power inherent to only women and is one of the worst things a HUMAN being can do to another.  A man can’t “hide” a pregnancy or maternity.  It’s impossible.  And that sucks for anyone that has to go through that. I always got a weird vibe off her and just found her very unlikeable.  Annoying even.  I’ve always been good at reading people and there was just something about her to me that was off-putting, somewhere under the surface.  And here we are…  she is despicable.
