LaCanfora asks evaluators about Pickett...

His whole career might not be his entire rookie contract. Pickett is gonna bust hard. He's the beneficiary of an extra year due to COVID and being surrounded by an above average team in a very down ACC. He's the age of most 2nd or 3rd year pros. He's average to below average in every facet for an NFL QB. He gets rattled easily. The dude got shook by a measuring tape at the Senior Bowl for god's sake.

At least with Willis you have top shelf physical talent. With Strong you have a big time arm. With Howell you have a dual threat guy who has had to carry an offense. With Corral you have a live arm and proven production against top college teams.

Pickett is the guy with first round talk who has the least upside IMO. I honestly think his ceiling is good backup. Don't draft a poor man's Teddy Bridgewater in the first. Good grief.

I don't get the Josh Allen comparisons at all besides a strong arm.  I feel like there are two main things the huddle overreacts to with quarterbacks.  Elite arm strength and their running ability.  I'm not saying those things arent positives, just saying people here seem to really overrate them.

Assuming adequate NFL arm strength (can make a throw to the outside hash), the most important QB qualities by far are reading defenses, decision making and accuracy.

The first two are impossible to determine in shorts and t-shirts.  But they can be learned over time.

Accuracy is partly a mechanical thing and partly decision making.  Josh Allen has improved tremendously his first few years in the league so it can be done.   But generally you get what you draft.

I have a hard time imagining someone trading up into the top five for Kenny Pickett.

what if I told you the team is Carolina and they move into the Jets spot? Can you imagine that?

Giants got two top 10 picks.  They could easily fool the Panthers into thinking they were going to trade down one of the top 10 picks to a team that would take Pickett one spot ahead of them.

That's a major red flag and screams a player who hit his peak at the right time..

If he was a FA you would be like stay away from him he was only good in his free agency season..

Yep. And again, if he were a regular Junior and 20/21 years old and had the season he had, I think everyone would be pretty damn hyped to potentially draft him. But he's going to be 24 by the start of the season. How much better can he actually get? Is he still ascending or is he about to plateau at age 24?

This is where the interviews would come in big. They could ask what changed between his junior and senior seasons, what clicked, what did he work to improve, etc.

But as a scout is it smart to exclude 4 years of tape because 1 season he turned it around???

I'm sorry I like trends and historical projections and I've never seen a guy go 4 season as a late round draft pick prospect to 1 season top 10 and he stays that same player.. Especially when that player was at the same school and the starting QB all those seasons.. No transfers or major injuries preventing his growth.. No he just got good the last year he didn't have any eligibility left.. hmmmm

At the very least, it does sound as if it's consensus that he is the best of the class. I've read that a couple places already as well. I think 6 is a reach but from the scouts it sounds like it's not a massive reach, as in a whole round?

That's not saying much.

What was not said by those evaluators was whether any of those QBs had a chance to make it in the pros or could play at a high level worthy of the capital investment.

Saying he's the best of a questionable class is not really saying he is anything special.

So was Joey Harrington

Your point? So was Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, etc. QB is always a risky pick.

Watch years 2017 thru 2020 and tell me what you think..

Watch Joe Burrow in 2018. Pickett wouldn't be the first QB to succeed in the NFL after one season of top play in college.

Do you remember the 2017 draft when Chicago got hoodwinked by SF into trading up one spot for Trubisky.  God that Chicago GM was an idiot.

No. 2: San Francisco → Chicago (D). San Francisco traded a first-round selection (2nd) to Chicago in exchange for Chicago's first-, third-, and fourth-round selections (3rd, 67th, and 111th) as well as a third-round selection in 2018

All the QB you name were younger and way more talented...

And please stop using Burrows as a template.. Burrows transferred from another program before he got his start and his 1st season in LSU was 16 tds 5ints with 7 rushing tds before he blew up his final season..

Pickett was at the same program 5 years was the starter all 5 and was 12-7 13-9 13-9 3 years before he had a good season..

Not the same player or same situation..

Side note... Burrows also got the small hands hit.. But he didn't hide them or come up with some dumb thumb excuse about it..

    • I was expecting him to struggle like most rookies do. But I expected to see a game or two that showcased why we picked him 1st overall.  Cam had a few games his rookie season. Bryce had zero.  Yeah, the Packers game was cool but the Packers defense made any QB they faced look like Payton Manning.
