PFF - best and worst 2021 NFL free agent signings

WORST

OC/OG Pat Elflein, signed with the Panthers for three years, $11.5 million

Another of the curious moves the Panthers made last offseason was prioritizing Elflein and Cam Erving during the first days of free agency, bringing in two players who had an extensive history of sub-par play along the offensive line. Neither player exceeded expectations in Year 1, as Elflein played just 534 snaps and earned a 42.0 PFF pass-blocking grade and a 50.1 overall mark. Elflein accrued multiple games with a PFF grade under 30, and he earned below-average marks as a run-blocker in every game except one.

I thought Elflein was playing somewhat better as a C at the end of the season.  Maybe a little below league average but OK.   However PFF puts him as one of the worst C in the league.  Ouch !

pre injury PFF had fat Matt paradis as one of the best centers in the league and he has been abysmal with Carolina. What’s your point, Ventura?

Oh and another NFL WORST signing was Sam Darnold (when his extension is included).  So it's a twofer for the Panthers.   Yay !

If we would have built around him I would think he would be better. We did exactly what the jets did to him. Sad really. I don’t want to do the Watson deal because I want to build it up. We do this, we don’t compete for another 3 years.

To be fair, you could put a tackling dummy at center and it would be better than Paradis.

We've had some bad offensive line play on this franchise but I think he's easily among the worst.  He reminds me of that French Canadian guy (Foucaults something or other I don't remember) that got shoved in at tackle against the Eagles on MNF on 2014 because of injuries to the Bell/Chandler juggernaut.

I remember watching a replay from one of our godawful wastes of an afternoon last year where Paradis got bull rushed into Darnold's lap without getting so much as a hand on the defender.  He snapped the ball and just got moved backwards ten yards.  Sadly I agree that Elflein is probably an upgrade over him.

LOL! Why? He's fuging terrible.

No choices. Limited cap. No worthwhile player wants to come here. Poor evaluating by coaching. And finally a gutted draft.

There are simply no options.

Considering the state and future of the team in 2019, this is called regressing.

Also known as invisible progressing according to Rhule.

    • I'm not to sure it's a solid argument to try to estimate what he will do this season, BUT he's had a solid 3 years in the league. Here's his numbers compared to Jewell's for the same time period. I can see the logic of getting a starting MLB for a (at best) WR4. AT, XL and Tmac are certainly our top 3 guys IN 2025. Certainly worth pondering.
    • Training camp just started and it's already starting... https://www.facebook.com/reel/24277303321904901/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v LOL No one believes you and you have fan pages sharing this with a "Play him or trade him" headline. Oh wee mayne. This is why no front offices wanted any part of this.
    • Honestly, it only makes sense if you're trying to chase being the best bad team you can be this year. The number one question we need answered this season is whether or not Bryce is our long-term franchise QB. Trading away a second year WR who was second on the team in catch percentage, first in yards per target, and who clearly outplayed your 1st round pick for a likely one year rental fill in LB is exactly the type of short sighted desperation moves that has made us the worst franchise in the league under Tepper. We gotta stop making these types of moves and just focus on building a good organization and a good roster. Lloyd is a JAG LB another bad team and awful defense is wavering on and a couple of Panthers fans are salivating over him. Oof. We just need to be patient and wait. Definitely make some calls around the league to teams deep at LB and see if there's an opportunity to add one for a late round pick. Definitely shop the waiver wire hard. The reality is that LB is almost certainly going to be a weakness for us this year. We weren't fixing our entire roster in one off-season and we're not fixing an overall weak positional group in late July.  If you trade for Lloyd LB is still a weakness and you've given up a young promising WR who could potentially help you answer the question of whether or not Bryce is that guy. That's bad football business.
