For this draft to be a home run, though, the Panthers are going to have to get the best available player while still addressing their top needs. For that to happen, someone must reach within the first five picks.

This is about as untrue as a post could be.

Charles Cross is a perfectly fine draft pick and requires absolutely 0 reaching by the top 5

Hard line drawn pre-draft: no picks in '23 should be traded away.

1) take the best LT at #6

2) trade back a few spots and take the best LT and use the next pick for a QB

3) trade back and go BPA with all picks

4) go BPA with #6

If the only thing we do right in this draft is not trading away 2023 picks it will be a successful draft.

Personally I'm onboard with 2) trade back a few spots and take the best LT and use the next pick for a QB

Carolina Panthers’ Dream Scenarios In The 2022 NFL Draft | Charlotte Observer - Jonathan M. Alexander

The Panthers are going to have to get the best available player while still addressing their top needs. For that to happen, someone must reach within the first five picks. Here is how that happens:

And though, it’d be impossible to get a Day 2 pick if they remain at No. 6, addressing one of their biggest needs while getting the best available player is the best thing for them.

If the Giants decided to take an offensive tackle with the fifth pick, the Panthers have got to consider trading back. At the same time, they’ve got to find a team willing to trade up for one of these quarterbacks.

Carolina could trade with Seattle or Pittsburgh. A trade with Seattle could net them a third-round pick. And they could get Cross with the ninth pick, if he’s still on the board. Cross, again, addresses the Panthers’ biggest need. Mississippi State ran a pass heavy, air-raid offense. So Cross knows how to pass block. Or maybe they fall in love with Willis and take him with the ninth pick.

Meanwhile, a trade with Pittsburgh to move back 14 spots, will likely net them the Steelers’ 52nd pick in the second round this year and potentially a first- or second-round pick next year, too.

If the Panthers get a 2023 first-round pick, they could use that, along with their own 2023 pick to move ahead in the draft again and get one of the top quarterbacks in what’s considered a much deeper quarterback class in 2023.

They could also try their luck at perhaps former Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, who is projected to go late in the first round or early in the second round.

Or maybe Northern Iowa left tackle Trevor Penning is still there, and the Panthers grab Strong in the second round. Pick: QB Desmond Ridder or LT Trevor Penning (Pick No. 20), Pittsburgh’s 52nd overall pick, Pittsburgh’s 2023 first round pick.

Haven't spent a ton of time looking at scenarios but doesn't it seem like if we somehow influence NYG to keep their #5 that our 6 pick becomes the slot people want to trade into?

If they have an idea to trade #5 but think we might swoop in and get their guy  at #6 one slot before them.... I wish Gettleman was still in NY because playing watching tlay t would be fun.

    • This is about getting open and YAC....and the QB we have.  You basically are just highlighting average depth when targeted vs 2 players. .  And yeah, I often say AT is a small slow reliable TE in terms of what he does for us.   That's what he is.   I think a couple of you want to make this into a Renfrow argument.   I'm a Renfrow fan.  Renfrow does not check the box of what a BY O needs either at the slot.  Renfrow just a niche roleplayer at this level.  it's easy to look up how horrific AT is with the ball in his hands and in terms of getting open.....and it's also easy to look up what a low ceiling of an offense the steady AT diet produces w/ BY.
    • The one time he's actively tried to lose was the best we've ever done.
    • I simply acknowledge BY is the QB.  And just like we did when we drafted him.....the type O you would need to setup around him for success was always pretty simple.  But we have done virtually the opposite.  XL dropping some passes isn't why we were ranked the 32nd O and 30th passing the past 2 years.  *Ricky Prohel was brought up only in regards to role function he served on the team.  Niche/specialist.   He wasn't eating up the snaps in the O.    AT should have a similar snap %. People could MAUL Ricky Prohel and put hands all over him.   We got to the Super Bowl in part because we were mauling guys (our slot CB).   You can't do that now.  AT has a MUCH easier life and still can't get open.  Or run.    If you live in 3 WR sets, with a weak armed QB, and you choose to put someone who can't get open or run in the slot.......well, your are going to have a weak pass O.  That's by design IMO.
