As I recall, Lombardi's been a GM a couple of times but never for very long.

A couple years back when he was working as an insider, he reported the story that John Fox was going to be fired. Nobody else was saying it but he stuck by it and repeated it over and over.

It didn't happen.

Ive heard he doesnt play politics well at all once he becomes GM. He even has a hard time getting hired by the sports circle. I think hes self-employed currently, but its a guess. Theres just not many former GM willing to talk to the public, thats a big reason he has my ears.

If we did get an elite LT @ 6, I'd be all for Darnold starting the season. We have a top tier player at RT. We just signed solid players to man the RG and C positions. We could possibly use BC at LG and let him play the whole season at one position. Our line would be significantly better than what we put out there in 2021.  On top of that we now have a proven line coach to make them even better.

Darnold has one year left. I'd like to see what we can do. If he sucks, cut bait at seasons' end. Going into 2023 we'll have a solid line, all of our high draft choices, and an opportunity to go all in for a QB via the draft, FA, or trade. I always looked at this as a 3 year rebuild, but last year was so bad that we're now a year behind. I'm willing to wait an extra  year to make the playoffs if it means we can stay atop the division for the rest of the decade.

I don't think it's a question of "IF" he sucks....He does suck.

So this decision made (whether it's Fitt deciding to draft an OT or QB) will determine whether we finally move forward (draft an OT, suck with Sam, and draft a Top-quality blue-chip QB in the 2023 Draft) or continue to spin our wheels praying that the QB drafted this year won't end up a journeyman.

We are not going to pay 37ish million dollars for Darnold and baker.   That is so stupid it makes my head hurt

I have said this and IMO it would make sense in a logical situation but offer Cleveland a 3 next draft and they take back Darnold.  They get something and we basically trade Darnold for Baker.  Problem is Baker would want assurances we don’t pick a QB in this draft cuz he couldn’t mentally handle it otherwise.  Anyway…Baker is a no go unless we go OT at 6…then maybe we revisit this.  Maybe not as Baker doesn’t move the needle much even if he is a better player than Darnold

I found his thought process flawed for two reasons.

He kept referencing QBs drafted since the 80s… that’s way too wide a date rage and what is asked of QBs now is very different to 30 years ago. At the least he should be looking at tracking year to year numbers to identify any trends. His only real metric he referenced was games played/started which offers little insight to the impact (win percentage, win uplift etc)

secondly his point was that you don’t draft high if there’s no elite prospect. However he seemed to be looking at total QBs drafted with no consideration for success by round on even his questionable criteria, let Alone  more appropriate ways to measure.

 One other issue is that he offered no consideration to drafting other positions instead and what that resulted in.

 Strikes me as someone who tries the word “data” around but doesn’t really have a good grasp of it or his data should be used

I personally think they have to hit on quarterback to have any relevance in the NFL, which has been true for the last couple decades. Selecting a tackle would mean another year without taking a shot at a quarterback, but they'll have potentially a great tackle and corner.

I guess the Panthers are looking for their own Joe Thomas and Hayden combo.

Why not? Tell me what he can't do or something that he does wrong.

1. not mobile but yet quick to run at the first sign of pressure (this will be a good look with our crap oline--he will be as bad or worse than Darnold under pressure;

2. small hands will lead to fumbles when his slow ass gets sacked;

3. lacking arm strength and ability to stretch the field; and

4. he's 24, had one good year in a weak conference, and has a low ceiling that will mean he will be mediocre at best.

He is Darnold 2.0.  Should we use a no. 6 pick to clone Sam Darnold?

In regards to:

2. Hand size is most certainly an issue in gripping the ball when defenders are swatting at it.  He has issues in college with a smaller ball

3. Not sure what you are reading or seeing but he doesnt really push the ball down the field with velocity.  Thats a knock on him.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
