Albert Breer: Baker Mayfield would be redundant to Sam Darnold and the Browns are pushing more for a trade than the Panthers are

Browns have literally zero leverage with Baker. zero. He's coming off a pretty major injury and a pretty terrible year. They obviously don't need him on the team and he's clearly unhappy. His contract stinks. 

 

Why would anyone trade for him?

 

The only way someone trades for him is if Cleveland agrees to eat his whole salary and it's for minimal draft compensation. Otherwise just wait till they're forced to cut him.

I would take a trade straight up, solves both teams problems for at least this year. NO picks. The money is the same. It still won't stop the Panthers for drafting a QB if the top 3 tackles are gone or dropping back and picking up Coral or Howell later on.

Put him on the jets or our panthers and you'd see similar numbers.  He was on a much better team last year and his stats were awfully similar to Darnold. 

We will not win anymore games with Baker under center than Sam.

Baker sucks.

Mans had 17 TD's and 13 picks last year. Darnold had 9 TD's and 13 picks. To say he's not better than him by a lot is kind of funny.

Baker has been in a markedly better position. Let's not forget that tidbit. Other than changing coordinators, like Darnold, Baker's situation has been superior in every way. 

I'll take Baker over Sam for sure, but only if we don't give anything of consequence. Otherwise, this FO, Fitterer included, will appear like braindead zombies.

Same difference. It wouldn't really change much for us. Trading for him when the Browns have to get rid of him is peak dumbass.

Just sign the new meat off the open market for cheap, none of it will be the difference maker for these turds anyways.

he has been in a better situation.   But bad situations aren't uncommon in the NFL.  How good or bad your QB is has a lot to do with how your situation ultimately looks in the end too.  Coaches have their stock go up and down because of the QB as well. 

but I wouldn't call Baker's rookie season an ideal scenario.  He is just a more taletned QB than Sam Darnold by a margin it isn't really worth comparing them as players.  And Baker still isn't good.

I agree.  Even in terms of skillset they arent even the same.  I dont get the redundant thing unless they are maybe saying record wise but even then I think we probably win one or two more games with Mayfield.

Perhaps the only reason I would be happy to see the Panthers trade for Jimmy G or Baker M is that it would indicate that we are getting a stud LT (probably Cross) or a stud Edge (probably Thibodeaux) or that we hope to trade back.

I think that is the first step regardless of what we do.

The Panthers, however, are considering trading back.  Bringing in Howell,  and that G from Chatanooga--both early day 2 picks.  If we trade back and take Howell, there are likely no tackles left, so a top G in late round 2 or early 3 could be the play, moving Brady C to LT.

That reeks of bust on three levels--but I share what THEY might be thinking, not what I want.  Every now and then someone rips me for doing that, insisting that what I think they will do is synonymous with what I want--Nope.

true.  I mean, in a sane org that move would signal an OT at #6. 

But this is a Matt Rhule lead team.   He spent his top 10 pick last season on a CB.   And while Horn is a fine player.....we also went out and signed the 2nd best DB in all the NFL and a top 10 draft pick from the year prior right after it.   We had too many other glaring needs to use that top pick on a CB last season but Rhule is going to Rhule.

Baker has also had like 4 different OC's. Do we just ignore that? That can hinder a QB in a heartbeat.

      Former league executive and current NFL.com analyst Marc Ross recently named his top second-year breakout candidates for the upcoming campaign. Ross includes Legette, who may be helped out by his team's latest first-round selection. He writes: Legette had a slow start to his NFL career, catching 49 passes for 497 yards and four touchdowns last season. Some of the struggles can be tied to his own growing pains -- he had eight drops on 81 targets, according to Pro Football Focus -- but he had also had to navigate the quarterback shuffle between Bryce Young and Andy Dalton early in Dave Canales' first season leading the Panthers. Canales recently said he believes Carolina has a DK Metcalf-like talent in Legette, who had foot surgery this offseason but was cleared to resume work in early April, and that having a full offseason alongside Young, who took a significant step forward in 2024, could lead to a breakout result in 2025. I anticipate it will also help that Carolina invested another first-round pick in a wide receiver, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, to complement Legette in the pass game. McMillan's presence, however, could take some pressure off Legette—who may be able to roam around in a more natural playmaking role.
