Mayfield "at an immediate disadvantage" (The 33rd Team)

Basically, an extended discussion of the difficulties a quarterback faces when going to a new team late in the offseason.

It's mostly common sense stuff, and admittedly valid. The picture that it paints isn't hopeless though. Tannenbaum does acknowledge that Mayfield could conceivably succeed, even if the current situation is challenging.

The only thing I'm worried about is if the Browns ruined him by playing him injured.  There's talk that he has adjusted his throwing mechanics.  That does not excite me.

As for learning a new O or walking on a new team, he went to the 1-31 Browns who had just lost the first 2 games of the season.  In the third game, they are down by 14 and Taylor gets hurt.  Mayfield makes his NFL debut, comes in and they come back to win the game.  They were in the playoff discussion until week 16, in his rookie year....that's with the HC being fired mid-season to be replace by....Kitchens.

He already knows the O-line coach, he knows Corbett and has chemistry with Higgins. Could be a lot worse. It will be interesting how Mcadoo approaches teaching 3 QB's the offense at the same time while 2 of them are "competing" for the starting job. Sounds like each guy getting half the reps they need if that's the case

I would be a lot more scared of that if it was his throwing shoulder that he had the injury and operation on.  And its REALLY hard to change your throwing mechanics permanently in such a small amount of time.  I imagine he will be back to throwing the same as he always has.

Is Baker allowed to say, meet up with Higgins and Corbett for example and run through some of the playbook on their own time? I know they can't meet with coaches but those guys came from Cleveland and could probably help speed up the deciphering before training camp even starts

Against who? The rookie or Sam? Maybe PJ? Too funny.

This offense will be run first. All a QB needs to do this year is hand off the ball not not turn it over. The bar is so low there really isn't a need to force it with any of the QBs. If Baker can't win that job outright then we either have the answer in Corral or it's going to be clown porn football again.

It's a new offense for Darnold too. He's had a little extra time but he's new to it as well.

Also, if I’m not mistaken, wasnt Darnold horrible in OTAs? So bad that some writers said that’d be the last time we see him taking starter reps?

Reports were actually that he looked good in OTAs.

The reason they said he wouldn't be taking starter reps anymore was because they expected the team to trade for Mayfield.
