The Run D Problem: Scheme, Personnel, or Both??

I think the biggest fault for our poor run defense is not necessarily the D-line, but our lack of a playmaker at linebacker. We have been blessed with great linebackers through Panther history all the way from Dan Morgan to Luke. The D-linemen take up the blocks, but it's the linebackers job to make the tackle. It's no coincidence that our run defense has fallen off with the retirement of Luke.

With our personnel, our base defense should be a 3-4. It's been this way for years now. I don't know why we show so many 4 man fronts when it's pretty clear Burns isn't an every down 4-3 lineman.

Before the season even started everyone with eyes knew our defensive line was our weakest unit on paper. We needed a legitimate nose tackle and defensive end yet sat on our hands all offseason. Ioannidis isn't a nose tackle and isn't great against the run. There were plenty of quality nose tackles on the market in free agency. We had the opportunity to sign Dunlap and Clowney who are both proven 4-3 ends and chose not to.

What we saw defensively today was pretty much expected by everyone except our coaches/front office.

Yup we got like 6 DT's on the roster and 10 guys than can play OLB but we ran a 4-3 zone all game. Or 4-7 or some dumb college poo. Just run a 3-4 and stop being cute

Lets not forget our DT depth consists of a 6th, 7th, and undrafted free agent. All with 2 or fewer years of experience.

    • I'm not to sure it's a solid argument to try to estimate what he will do this season, BUT he's had a solid 3 years in the league. Here's his numbers compared to Jewell's for the same time period. I can see the logic of getting a starting MLB for a (at best) WR4. AT, XL and Tmac are certainly our top 3 guys IN 2025. Certainly worth pondering.
    • Training camp just started and it's already starting... https://www.facebook.com/reel/24277303321904901/?mibextid=rS40aB7S9Ucbxw6v LOL No one believes you and you have fan pages sharing this with a "Play him or trade him" headline. Oh wee mayne. This is why no front offices wanted any part of this.
    • Honestly, it only makes sense if you're trying to chase being the best bad team you can be this year. The number one question we need answered this season is whether or not Bryce is our long-term franchise QB. Trading away a second year WR who was second on the team in catch percentage, first in yards per target, and who clearly outplayed your 1st round pick for a likely one year rental fill in LB is exactly the type of short sighted desperation moves that has made us the worst franchise in the league under Tepper. We gotta stop making these types of moves and just focus on building a good organization and a good roster. Lloyd is a JAG LB another bad team and awful defense is wavering on and a couple of Panthers fans are salivating over him. Oof. We just need to be patient and wait. Definitely make some calls around the league to teams deep at LB and see if there's an opportunity to add one for a late round pick. Definitely shop the waiver wire hard. The reality is that LB is almost certainly going to be a weakness for us this year. We weren't fixing our entire roster in one off-season and we're not fixing an overall weak positional group in late July.  If you trade for Lloyd LB is still a weakness and you've given up a young promising WR who could potentially help you answer the question of whether or not Bryce is that guy. That's bad football business.
