Legit, non knee jerk question.. is Baker even a capable backup at this point worth using a roster spot and 5th rounder on?

I mentioned it before, but we get to keep our 5th rounder provided he doesn’t play more than 70% of snaps.. But besides that, it’s gotten so bad with Baker, I’m starting to think he isn’t even a capable backup at this point and PJ Walker is at least a wild card with more upside and knows the offense way better. 
 

Is he even worth a roster spot at this point when we can easily roll with Sam and PJ. There is no way Fitt is going to lose that 5th rounder by having Baker play more snaps, so it begs the question.. What exactly is Baker’s role here?

I'm wondering the same thing.

Here's the thing.  Under Rhule's cast of clowns in the offensive show, we had Bridgewater complaining before and after he walked out the door (and Teddy generally doesn't say much), Darnold who may have been in a worse situation here than he was with the Jets, and now Mayfiled who may be in his worse situation as a pro (and unfortunately, it may not be close).

None of these guys are going to be mention with the NFL's top tier QBs of all time, but I think their limited talents was hindered even more by our brilliant brain trusts.

The 5th is gone. It’s a 4th if he plays 70%. Sitting him doesn’t get the 5th back.

Mayfield needs a scheme designed for him specifically.  If he has this, I think he's a potential starter.  Mayfield is not a traditional pro style, drop back passer.  Murray in the 2nd half last weekend is how we need to use Mayfield and he'll take hits, but he's not capable QB in the pocket all the time.

PJ Walker and Baker were both here for all of training camp but Baker has gotten all the reps, so PJ definitely doesn't know the offense better. As for Baker, he played 4 seasons before this and was never even close to being this terrible. We've gone through 4 QBs in 3 years who have all looked so inept that we felt the need to replace them immediately even though they've all (except for Darnold) had success before or after playing for us. Hard to judge our talent with this coaching staff being among the worst in the history of the sport.

It’s mental. Between batted passes, the weight of playing in a contract year and the psychological sting being let go by the Browns for next to nothing.. he’s broken

      I know it's only been training camp and one preseason game, but I think T-Mac has already shown his floor to be exactly what I said about him in the pre-draft process. That his floor if he never improves his game, is as one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, if not even still a low end #1 (i.e. a 25th-ish best WR in the league). I think it's safe to say he's already established himself as our #1, and there are only a small handful of teams in the league where I don't think he'd be their starting #2 WR in Week 1. Bengals (Higgins), Dolphins (Waddle), Eagles (Smith), Bucs (Godwin if healthy), Rams (Adams) are really the only teams where I think he'd be the #3 as a rookie in Week 1.  A few others like the Lions (Williams), Bears (Odunze), Seahawks (Kupp), Commanders (Deebo), where he'd be the 2b to start the season, just because they're vets and/or already have a year or two of experience with their team/QB. And even having said that, I think by year 2, he's better than every one of those players (And no, I'm not saying he's already going to be better than a prime version of Adams, just whatever he'll be at 33 next year), and same goes for Kupp, but that's more because it seems like his body might be quitting on him in a way that hasn't happened to Adams (yet).

      Well to be fair, Horn not practicing right now to let his stitches heal up from a car accident isn't something that should be concerning.  Sure, you don't want him missing practice leading into the season, but it's one that once healed, won't have lingering affects or fear of re-injuring it, it was just bad luck.

      Quality backups are absolutely important. This franchise has been plagued with depth problems. That said, there is a little bit of dismay that Mays can't beat out a 1-legged man, and all the talk going into the off-season was how BC would certainly be gone since he had position versatility.  In the end, it doesn't matter too awfully much, as I would be shocked to no end if Corbett makes it through the season. We know what we have in reserve, and that should surely be better than trying to sign random fat guys mid season to try and take over.
