I was on the tank bandwagon, but after looking more further, I say we just roll with Corral and draft BPA.

who cares

you don’t conduct drafts based on “BPA”

that’s generic Internet forum talk for people who gobble down NFLisms and think that by repeating them outward they project themselves as intellectuals

”BPA” is the assignment of value relative to need

it always is, for every team. An undersized Defensive end isnt jumpstarting the panthers offense and making them super bowl contenders

the team has seen first hand how hard it is to get a top 3 pick. If they end up with one, they’re going to take a QB.

Actually, the top five picks are usually based on the BPA. There have been studies done that show you are more successful drafting the BPA in the first round (not any other round) than drafting for need. Most GMs in the league lean into this model, and during march/april you hear it often in their interviews.

In our case, QB and DE will be a need. If we end up in the top 3, I think DE over QB could be the mentality, but it depends on the coach and gm we have come draft time.

There was no Andrew Luck or Cam Newton in the classes that Allen, Mahomes and Jackson were drafted either, yet those guys run the league. You have to shoot your shot.

Facts. It’s evident the Panthers shot NO shots at QBs in the NFL draft under Matt Rhule until this year, despite the desperate need for a franchise QB. They should have drafted Fields or Jones in 2021, taken a shot in Jalen Hurts in the 2nd round in 2020, just anything to have a rookie QB in the mix. Rhule’s tenure was a textbook example of how NOT to build an NFL team. It starts with the QB, and you go from there. You keep taking shots at QBs until you get one IN THE DRAFT. Arizona isn’t a great franchise but they drafted a QB in the first round two consecutive years and they’ve had better records than us.

I agree with Hurts but not the rest. If you go back to 2020 on the huddle you will see I was screaming and posting Hurts was our guy. It just didnt work out that way though.

I get that you believe that what these GMs say in public interviews is a deep dive 30 for 30 commentary on the elaborate formula for drafting collegiate prospects but I’m going to ruin the illusion for you

they just say that because it’s socially acceptable and has no specific point of criticism

when draft day rolls around, teams still target players at the positions of most positional value relative to their needs

sorry to ruin the experience for you

I think it's funny that their stats are near identical minus the amount of actually air yards.

I wouldn’t say “near identical” his stats are clearly better but im also not talking about stats alone. Just didn’t wanna over post by adding all sorts of stuff. But watching them both play as well, Stroud is better.
*warning*These are the opinions of a drunk fan.

I think Stroud is a better pocket QB than fields and does a great job with touch. Just a comment. I wonder what it would look like if you add Haskins stats too. I think it's why Ohio State QBs are so hard to evaluate.

With that said I like Stroud a lot, but i have said a million times I think the most successful QBs come from mid level colleges cause everything is harder for them. So I'm big on Ward, Levis and Hooker (minus his age, but Burrow was old too so....)

to add to this, “value” isn’t even exclusively relegated to ability but to positional value,  and cost/investment, both in terms of draft capital and financial tenability in regards to the player/position in question and the means of replacing it through additional means

for example, interior linemen aren’t drafted high because A) their impact on a game is comparatively minimal B) you can buy elite interior line play in free agency for a pittance, and it is relatively reliable to do so. why would you spend a high pick on that position when you can use it on a position that can be less reliably acquired and costs more to acquire through trades/FA?

this is what constitutes BPA, nothing I’m saying is particularly insightful or bold, and yet this board specifically seems to have this massive demographic of posters we have to humor every off-season (wait it’s not the off-season) who believe that the draft is a matter of nothing more than “wow this guy is so good/safe, nothing else matters, take him” because ole gettleboy said that’s how it works and if you get into all that high falutin thinkin stuff you’re gonna miss out on a chance to draft a Really Good Player

Hurts dropped because of his size but honestly I think he's playing over his ceiling right now. I expect the Eagles to come back down to earth eventually. They have a STUPID easy schedule this year. They remind me of the 2015 Panthers feasting on bad teams. At least the Panthers played some decent teams that year. Go look at the Eagles schedule, it's a joke.

And RE: Fields. It's unfortunate what's happening to him in Chicago but I can't say he had any sort of proper development plan by his team. He would probably have the most success under Mike Shula and Ken Dorsey in Buffalo. If Dorsey gets a head coaching gig I bet he takes Shula as his OC, and a QB like Fields could have success in a true read-option offense.

    • Why do I think Bill B has a shot at GM President of Football Operations all of a sudden? A more fun question is, could you imagine Tepper’s reaction to the same situation?
    • Here is how I see the first part of the second round going down: 33. Buffalo:  They need a WR above all else, but they could use DL as well.  Johnny Newton has to look like the best value here, but I expect the pick to be Adonai Mitchell, WR Texas. 34. New England:  They would ideally like to add a LT here, but that would be a reach.  Johnny Newton would also fill a key secondary need, but since Maye is likely to start in September, a WR might be the pick.  WR Ladd McConkey Georgia seems to be a Patriot if you think about it. 35. Arizona:  They need a true stopper at CB.  Cooper DeJean CB Iowa, your wait should end now.  This pick could be Kool Aid, and that would be more appropriate in the desert.  I feel 60% confident that DeJean is a Cardinal if he survives Buffalo, but I feel about 30% confident this could be Kool Aid. 36. Washington:  A team with so many needs is hard to gauge.  They got their QB.  This pick could be Kool Aid, but they could also use OT, WR, TE, and Edge.  They have 2 picks in round 2, so they should take the best available player in a need area:  Kool-Aid McInstry, CB Bama. 37. LA Chargers:  Hard to say what Harbaugh will do, but he needs WR and he could go Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State.  However, I think he could use a bit of DL help, and Johnny Newton DT, sitting there with a mid first round grade is too much value to pass up.  They lost Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, however, and they must be replaced.  The Chargers need multiple WRs.  Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State is the pick. 38. Tennessee:  If Johnny Newton, DL Illinois is there, they RUN to turn in the card.  DL is a huge need.  However, I expect a trade up to snatch Newton before he falls this far.  If he is not there, they could take Jackson Powers-Johnson, C Oregon, giving them 2 stud OL.  The pick is very important because the Titans do not have a third rounder. 39.  Carolina: The Panthers definitely need CB and ILB.  There is some debate over C, and there is a quality C on the board--I do not see them going that route, however.  I think they love Cooper and Wilson, ILBs.  I think they like CB Saintrisil.  All are Dawgs.  They could double dip at WR, but I doubt it here at 39--with 2 LBs on the board and a few CBs as well, they could trade back a bit.  Instead of picking a player, here is a list of Best available that seem to be fits and positions of need: EDGE Marshawn Kneeland.  C  Jackson Powers-Johnson CB Enis Rakestraw LB Edgerrin Cooper LB Payton Wilson CB T J Tampa LB Junior Colson CB Max Melton CB Mike Saintrilsil CB Kamari Lassiter DT Brandon Fisk WR Ja’Lynn Polk WR Jalen McMillan WR Troy Franklin WR Dez Walker WR Roman Wilson WR Brenden Rice WR Malachai Corley     DGE Marshawn Kneeland.  C  Jackson Powers-Johnson CB Enis Rakestraw LB Edgerrin Cooper LB Payton Wilson CB T J Tampa LB Junior Colson CB Max Melton CB Mike Saintrilsil CB Kamari Lassiter
