Why would next year matter? They would only have to pay their base salary for this year. About 1.5M combined.

Then the Bills can walk away. Both players lose significant value after the trading deadline.

If they went in with the intention of cutting players they traded 1st, 3rd and 4th round picks for ... how does that look on management?

Like they are acquiring elite and decent talent in a year where they are considered the favorite to win SB. For the cheapest amount possible. That’s what is valuable about them. Shaq has zero trade value after deadline. They can make a call on CMC and just pay him 12/M year. No guarantees. But teams aren’t giving up high picks for that for a RB.

Giving CMC 12m a year puts them in the exact situation that I called out originally. They have to let a lot of talent walk to keep CMC at that rate.

For a team that isnt lacking RB horsepower or isnt lacking a LB.... I dont see this being the move that gets them to the final dance.

They need DB help pretty bad right now due to injuries.... thats where they would focus their resources.

Then trade him to someone else and get a pick back. These are late picks. No one cares if you get to a SB. This is their window. As far as justifying picks, that line of thinking gets Darnold 5th year options.

I have no idea how we got here based on the original conversation I was having. But sure. I agree...?

At the end of the day, while I think Shaq is a fine OLB, I think it's prudent for the Panthers to deal him if they're going to get a 4th/conditional 5th (or better obviously). This season is already done so not having him isn't going to impact a playoff race. Cutting him in the offseason is going to net $13m in cap space even with the dead money hit.

If you can get some draft compensation for him from a team like the Commanders, Packers, or Bills (not even sure if the Bills need LB help), it's worth it because it allows the team to throw Brandon Smith in the line-up and gives the FO 10-11 games to decide if they've got something with him or if they need to dedicate potentially a day 2 pick on a replacement going forward.

Consistently mediocre. Why this organization ever saw him as a successor to Luke and/or TD and paid him as such has always baffled me. He's fine as a plug in starter but he's not a difference maker. He becomes a liability when he's paid like one of the top LBs in the league because he's simply not. He's not even close.

You don't think he's top half of the Sams in the League?

You think you can instantly replace his production on and off the field with a 4th or 5th round LB?

Because if you trade a guy you need to be able to replace his production either at his position or another position or you loose.

    • I mean in this economy, companies have to be smarter with their spending. Sending reporters to Charlotte to cover a moribund, Pop Warner-level franchise is the ultimate waste of money that should get execs fired. If the media were being kept out, they'd report that--it's the most self-important profession in the world. Even for the locals who know "Panthers suck yet again" stories get them no clicks. Bottom line, no conspiracy here. They're just not worth covering.
    • why cant they just let teams have their kicker kick it and then run off the field? Thats the only thing he can do and he also cant recover an onside. The kicking team will have 12 men to start, including the kicker, and then he runs off.  the new rule seems complicated. Not sure if Im going to like it or not. If they wanted more returns, they shouldve just gone back to the old way.
