We have also been subjected to awful coaching.  We have managed to build a good roster, minus a QB.  Losing for a top 5 pick does not even remotely ensure you find that QB.  History says otherwise.

Bro our roster is poo and it's why we have 4 wins. Rhule was gone week 6 and we have won 3 games since then. There is no moral victory there.

Better than 3-9. As a fan I’ll always be happy with a win.  Also happy for the players, coaches and their families.  Follow the Bozeman’s on Twitter and explain to me how you cannot be happy for them after a win.  Screw the draft.  I want to win every week.

Amen, Brother!

So we then use valuable assets that could be used to bolster the rest of the roster. Another brilliant strategy

you can't ask NFL players/coaches to tank. It doesn't work. Too few games in a season and big contracts on the line.

as such, when teams lose, and lose a lot, it is often due to lack of talent. hence the huge holes that most top 10 drafting teams have.

If your team is in good shape you can afford to trade up to get a final piece, like a QB.

Ask the Jets and Browns how chasing QBs every draft has worked out for them.  Hell, the Jets just benched their latest top 5 QB pick.  The Browns just paid an NFL record QB contract to a rapist just to get out of the annual QB merry-go-round in the draft.

The jets and browns have great defenseses because they pick high as well. Ask Miami and Texas how they are doing without a QB. Ask the Titans and the Patriots are doing with a mediocre one.

Yeah, but I can hope they lose for the team’s own good

If only Patrick Mahomes was a #1 overall pick, your argument would hold water, but he wasn’t. He was the #10 pick.

And the 2nd best QB in that draft, 3 time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson, didn’t go until pick #12.

The first QB taken in that draft, Mitch Trubinsky, was the least successful of the three. His fifth year option wasn’t picked up, he’s played for 3 teams, and is already considered a backup only 6 years into his career.

you can, you can hope for whatever outcome you want. I understand why people are putting so much emphasis on draft position, but I've seen too many top 5 busts and I'd rather see development of personnel we have leading to wins. Just a difference of opinion

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
