Tepper clearly wants to change the Panthers identity

Yeah gotta keep reasonable expectations no matter the hire.  This past season was a refreshing change, can be credited to some walking into pretty good situations.  Though I do give each a ton of credit.  Daboll especially.

O'Connell 13-4

Daboll 10-7

McDaniel 9-8

It cuts both way you also have Kingbury. Lovie Smith, Eberflus, Dennis Allen among others flaming out. The Daboll success is what folks will remember and say let's do it. They don't remember that most new coaches struggle particularly with no extensive NFL experience or head coach experience.

They aren't that much better. But in Wilkes case you have real experience with the team and know he can win. With new guys with no proven experience it is a crap shoot. Still that is what folks want. Instead of taking a coach who could deliver solid but unspectacular results we go for the unknown since he could be great even if history says he wont.

If you know he is "solid but unspectacular" why in the hell wouldnt you want to roll the dice to get spectacular? Simply being good enough has been what this franchise has settled for since its inception

Yep.  Can imagine some of these guys will have certain things down, but then there's probably a ton of nuances that they can only improve upon with experience and having the right guys around them.  Some of these guys have been around some pretty esteemed or diverse staffs, others, do have quite brief stints so far. Daboll is a good example of a guy that interfaced with a ton of different coaching trees and circles.  Has likely built off some great mentors and experience.

Then you look at Steichen; he was pretty much with Mike McCoy, Frank Reich and Siriani his whole career.  It's a pretty siloed group.  And he's supposedly a pretty awkward guy.  Is he really a guy that can manage things Monday through Thursday?

Interesting questions to rummage through this fine Tuesday

    • Reasonable. I mean I didn’t see a clear path to relief this season myself. As I have typed already, I think the QB FA class is more interesting next season and that draft is supposed to be stacked as well. There just weren’t many options this year.  When you have Tepper to contend with you have to tread lightly around this unless you are 100% certain and willIng to stake your job on it.   There were a couple of outings that helped Bryce a lot in terms of  thinking maybe he can do this, and if you are a supporter you are giving them a lot of weight. You are likely to think just get him some more help and he can do that every week. Which I think Tepper falls into that category.  And the playoffs, division champs, regardless of the way I see that, the supporters will also give that a lot of weight.    And the big one, the atmosphere In BOA for that WC game, Tepper had to be soiling himself over that. If you pulled Bryce out right now you had better be right and your new guy had better make the playoffs and look good doing it or you will be gone and your chance to build your old team back into respectability will be gone too.  So here we have Pickett on a one year deal, and Grier and King. I understand it.
    • Well, seeing as we play the Lions at home this year, pretty sure that rumor isn't true.
    • Totally possible imo, I also caught that snippet from Morgan where he said “If” we sign him. The lack of competition says otherwise tho 🤷‍♂️
