this is incorrect from what we know - we offered a better trade package BUT Watson refused because of lack of a guaranteed contract... so we were willing to 'trade the farm' for him...

This argument is incredibly stupid.

If we were truly willing to trade the farm, regardless of which offer was bigger, then Watson would be here, period.  That's trading the farm.  Not being out bid.

Here is a link from Walter football updated on jan 10  I shared one last month that was better but this at least gives the nss as med of those outside of the top 4

if the 49ers can make a starting qb out if the last draft pick, the new hire of the panthers should be able to do something with a first or second rd pick

update  this also shows 2023 projected  draft as well  some eeem to be left out like Penix but at least it gets names out there

Top 10 qbs in 2023

honestly, I like that kid from Houston and the guy from Stanford

at any rate, the new offense and it’s system will determine what the panthers do, we all know that.

How good are the Panthers scouts, who knows

Again.  Goes back to other unteachables so outside of physical measurables.

just like Russ’s weight never effected him.   He has it between the ears.  He feels the pressure better than about any QB to come out in a long time.  He reads defenses better and his pocket awareness.  He knows when to get the ball out or get out of the pocket and go off script.  Which outside of Mahomes, he’s the best I’ve seen.

Sure, I get what you're saying. If he's super smart then perhaps the risk of getting hurt will be mitigated, but he's going to get hit (just like Russ has gotten hit plenty). But, remember, Russ really isn't a small guy. He has a certain amount of constitution to him.

Don't get me wrong, if we trade up for either, I won't be crying. I'll just deal with it as it comes. You gotta pay to play in some circumstances. If you want to roll with the big dogs, you have to be willing to come off the porch.

Except when a player has a "no trade" clause like Watson does.  He gets to pick where he goes no matter how much we try to trade away to acquire him.

.

Clayton Tune (Houston) is projected to be drafted  somewhere in the 4-6 round.

Like you, I feel he could have good value at that rang

Tune is 6-foot-3, 220-pounder, has enough size and will enter the next level with a lot of starting experience because he broke into the starting lineup during the 2019 season

It's a saying that means betting the future.  You are not ABSOLUTELY correct, you just have a different opinion of what that means.  The Browns still have cap space and some picks so they didn't risk "everything" to acquire Watson as that is completely unrealistic.  Many analysts were saying the Niners "bet the farm" to acquire Lance which was 3 first rounds picks.  Stop arguing about a simple saying a poster used that means they wagered a lot of future assets.

Would you like me to post what Google says it means? I know what it means. What we were offering for Watson was a lot, but it wasn't some earth shattering contract, plain and simple. It wasn't setting any fianancial precedents. It was simply a big contract. The  Browns gave him an unprecedented financial contract that will hamstring them for many many years to come if they made the wrong deal.

Three first round picks is a lot for an unproven rookie, particularly one as raw as Lance. It was truly unprecedented. That being said, they made the deal, and they obviously either got lucky, or their scouting department and coaches are smart enough to work around Lance's situation. It appears that "betting the farm" was mitigated by their smart decision-making.

If he falls I’d love it. If not I’d like to move up and snag him. He’s my QB1 in this class.

If he's there then it will depend on our new coach I guess.  It's possible the Panthers will not have a 1st round pick at all. The draft is a few months away. A lot of things can and will happen between now and then.

Well, it's like I always say: the Devil is in the details. Watson's contract was  unprecedented. What made it so was the amount of guaranteed money. The repercussions could last at least four more years, but probably more.

I'm not saying that we won't trade up. That's going to depend upon how much they believe in an unproven rookie. But even if we do trade up, we're probably not going to set any precedents in draft compensation for said player.

Although I agree it was unprecedented at the time there's a lot that goes into that - I think the circumstances moreso than anything, because otherwise it's just a natural progression of salaries. To me, the compensation package to HOU was a huge risk for us given those circumstances as much as the contract.

Also I agree with you on the draft... I think whatever we give up will be similar to other recent trades. As the 49ers are showing you can move up to trade for a player and even if it doesn't work out super well you can still have an excellent team with the right coaching. That's where I want us to be.

I can respect that.

    • Same as when Jordan Gross said that having to block Julius Peppers made him a better player. But I mean no sh*t, having to block one of the best DE’s of all time will up your game. I bet Gross went up against other DE’s in games and was like, this is nothing. Horn isn’t that level of player obviously, but Legette has his work cut out for him going against Horn in practice. The coaches should be able to tell pretty quick what they have in Legette.
    • Atlanta was at least smart enough to draft a QB that's over 6' tall.
