I Think it Should Be Wilks...

I'm 39 years old so yes I knew this already. It does not mean McDermott did learn much under Rivera. But not all his coaching abilities came from him. He was under Andy Reids coaching tree.

Andy Reid or not, the coach he cut his teeth under was Rivera. He was fired in PHI...

That's not coaching tree success, that came here in CAR and most of the talk about him getting HC considerations was after a few years here.

Had nothing to do with ''Andy Reid'' ties.

Wilks blew it in the Tampa game by punting on two 4th and 1 opportunities early in the game. With the offense rolling and a chance to stomp the Bucs into oblivion early, Wilks chickened out and played conservative. It was a game where all caution should have been thrown to the wind and all the stops pulled out. How will he coach when he has security? Probably even more conservative.

I’m not a fan of going back to John Fox/Ron Rivera conservative play bend-don’t-break defense (although often, Wilks’s defenses did break) and running the ball. It’s a new era of football where the rules heavily benefit the passing game.

But ultimately who cares. Tepper is a horrible owner in so many ways and I’m confident whatever choice he makes, even if it’s a good decision at first, will be a failure because of he is too involved and obviously has no idea how to build a winning football team.

Wow, sounds like one of the other teams that needs a head coach would really want him.

Pro Wilks crowd will not address this. He went .500 as the coach and lost every big game he coached in. But by god, I’m not sure we can do better.

I have been and will continue to hope we get anyone but Steve Wilks.

Nah I’ve been reading this thread and there have been multiple people including myself who have given you legitimate reasons to why wilks would be an abysmal hire.

but you only respond to the posts that are calling you out or patting you on the back.

Because when you are getting one sentence dismissive posts, those aren't worth responding to either. I love debating posts with laid out arguments, but too often once any football based rebuttal is made it turns in to a name calling contest or worst. Also, Wilks wouldn't be an abysmal hire. He may not be the one you want, but abysmal is laughable.

I think it should be Wilks!! He wants to be here and the team wants him here!! It seems like a lot of Candidates are even turning down being interviewed

I know Johnson decided to stay in Detroit but who all has declined? And if we are highlighting this as a reasoning why Wilks should be the guy why would we not also assess why no one else has requested to interview him for their coaching vacancy?

It’s really the Jim Johnson tree.   Ron and McD both are part of it.

How do you win big games regularly without a ''big game'' QB.

Name a team that wins big games regularly and consistently without one of the better QBs...

Literally we were working with some of the worst options.

What kind of unrealistic expectations did you guys have for Baker, or Sam...?

I mean damn, he went .500 with essentially no QB, and a limited defense.

    • Sure want him to play if possible!!!!
    • Which would be 8-8-1. An improvement.
    • Not sure who you are talking to. Everybody maybe? Anyhow the family cat woke me up so….  Saturday, I will be in the playoff frame of mind for that game don’t worry about that. Will be living and dying on each play. Pretty sure everyone will be. That is still a few days away though.  Right now it is yes we made the playoffs. Backed into it with some convoluted 3 way tie breaking magic. It took a heroic finish - not by us, but by Atlanta. I don’t hardly know how to feel about it. I don’t feel like we won it. It is just sort of, well okay here we are, somehow. Our number came up. We were lucky. And that is what we were. Not good, lucky.  As far as here, this discussion, I think people rightly feel like, look at the offense. And it is kind of, what offense? They shut our run down and we become totally stagnant. Some people have faith that the QB can beat people with his arm but we aren’t doing it. We went into our bye off a big high. In or tied for, first place. We control our destiny. 4 games to do it. And we freaking finished 1-3. That control our destiny thing? We didn’t control poo when it comes down to it. Lost in the mix is basically a huge collapse. No one really called it out, it got lost in the excitement of the chase. But, 1-3 with the playoffs on the line - every week. Not inspiring. I mean, you don’t call that trending up, and if we hadn’t lucked into the tournament that would be our finish headed into the offseason. Not what you want. And if we don’t win Saturday? 1-4 to finish the year.  Limping out.  Okay that said I do hate going into playoffs on a winning streak because you are almost due to end the streak and that loss ends your season, so dropping One before the elimination games start is almost a comfort. But 1-3 with a 54 yard passing total in one of them? Followed by 14 points in a must win. Hmmm.   I am supposed to be optimistic? Sorry I don’t think I can be. I can hope, that’s different. It has just been a rough 8 years, and the excitement of having a winning record is in the rear view this week. About the only way we can have one is make the NFCCG I think.    Anyhow, on offense, where are the signs that we can beat people who stymie our run game? I suppose it could happen out of the blue but we haven’t really been able to pull that off.  Beating Tampa Bay was good. That was it though. Our other last little bit of glory is two plays on 4th down where they didn’t really pay attention in the back end, somehow, and we got two really nice results.  Not once, but twice back to back. Honestly it was so out of character it felt a little fluky.  And here we are, depending on that to happen Saturday. At least I guess is what we are hoping for. Good luck to us.
