"This is an awful place we're in in college basketball," he said. "Pittsburgh bought a team. OK, fine. My [big donor] talks about it, but he doesn't give anyone any money. Nothing. Not one guy. Our guys make like $20,000. Wake Forest bought a team. Miami bought a team. ... It's like, 'Really, this is where we are?' That's really where we are, and it's only going to get worse."

He added: "It's crazy. That's why those guys got out -- that's why Jay [Wright] got out, Mike [Krzyzewski] got out. That's the reason they got out. The transfer portal and everything is nuts. It really is."

Boeheim has since apologized

Quote

Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim has issued an apology after claiming other ACC schools have deceitfully used NIL to build their rosters.

"I would like to clarify remarks I made in a conversation I had with a media member following our game on Saturday evening," Boeheim said in a statement. "I apologize to the schools I mentioned. I believe the ACC member institutions are in compliance with NCAA rules governing Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). It was not my intention to imply otherwise."

It's the offseason(for the Panthers already) and the basketball forum doesn't get much use. I know NIL has been discussed before, but Boeheim is right, it's going to get worse.

What's the issue?

College students now get paid. They should have been getting paid. If you want the best of the best you gotta pay. NCAA has been screwing student athletes for decades. It's now the students turn to make profit.

Get that money college athletes!

I don’t think the issue is with the kids being (rightfully) compensated.

I think the reaction is based on fear of the unknown.  How it will change the game.  Program prestige and tradition will no longer be top shelf recruiting tools.  Cash is king.

yeah, I mean, these schools that are used to having a monopoly on schools that didn't want to compete in the race to get the death penalty are now getting raped because some of those small schools have bigger banks than theirs.

There will need to be a salary cap of some kind, for sure but for now, it is truly fair.

Well, college basketball has sucked for the last 15 years, so maybe the product will be better to watch now.

Truth…college and pro basketball used to be incredible but the talent is watered down and no one plays simple fundamental basketball anymore.  The NBA is pretty much unwatchable and college is without star players

I actually think it’s been declining for like 25 years or more

Boheim said a stupid thing.  He specifically called out Wake and Pitt for "buying" teams.  Which is absurd.

Jim Boeheim says he calls the shots on his retirement, claims Pitt, Wake Forest, Miami 'bought' their teams - CBSSports.com

When reached for comment late Saturday night, Wake Forest coach Steve Forbes told CBS Sports of Boeheim's claim: "He's wrong. He's one thousand percent wrong. I don't have one player on my team that got NIL to come here. That's a fact. I've never had a player come here for NIL."

Boheim did later retract his statement about Wake and Pitt.

But his comments are ironic given that he had wins vacated for impermissible gifts involving Carmelo Anthony.

Might be time for the crazy old coot to retire.

Accurate. College basketball was far and away my favorite sport growing up. I've been Carolina only for over a decade now. If Carolina isn't playing I'm not watching. The sport is a shadow of what it once was, even here in the heart of college basketball country.

    • Umm yeah. When did he get it done at the right time? I seem to remember a 4-6 finish and needing Atlanta to win our way into the playoffs but whatever.
    • I mean....no lies detected. See above. We have traded a fortune to draft a guy #1 overall that people have lowered standards for to the point that not playing like Jimmy Clausen and looking like a poor man's Kyle Allen occasionally is worthy of a contract extension making him one of the highest paid QB's in the league. That is cope on steroids.
    • summary: "let's talk about your draft, what did you think about Freeling" Dan:   guys with a huge upside, can come in and compete to start.  High ceiling "he does what for your offense?" Dan:   it's hard to find left tackles, guys that big and athletic.  We have Icky coming off an injury, we signed Walker, I believe your offensive line can never be too strong.  If we're going to win the game, it's gotta be up front on both sides of the ball, so we make a point of emphasis on making both sides of the front as strong as possible. "how many mocks did you see Monro falling to you." Not many times, left tackles are gonna go a lot earlier than when we took him.  We want to add the best player, in free agency or the draft"  that's our philosophy, to get the best players possible. "Hunter and Brazzell." Dan:  we followed the board.  Lee we felt very highly of him , super strong.  Brazzel so flexible and loose, can open the verticle.  Will Lee we held in high regard. "you take a look at your receiver room, Coker, my goodness, your offensive rookie of the year in Tet.  Lost Rico, but there is Jonathan Brooks. " Brooks coming off two knee injuries, he worked his way back, looking great, fully healthy, will help in pass and run game.  Icky, not sure when he's coming back but we're excited about both "plan on extending Bryce" we'll keep talking, will keep internally.  We believe in him, has such a great grasp of Canales and offense, has improved every year. "he's clearly come back from the benching, the arrow is trending up, where does he feel" Bryce knows where we stand with him, when and if a deal gets done, he knows we feel great with him, we'll get something done at the right time. "if this a prove it situation?" everyone in the building has to prove it, has to earn it. Tmac was everything we wanted, his work ethic, he's so big and talented, but he puts the work in, and is a great teammate. "your level of expectation, the building's level of expectation for 2026 "our goal is to win the division every year, we know we have to earn it.  we have to put the work in every day, proving it on the practice field, and our  guys know that." "schedule" we haven't opened at home in 2 or 3 years.  We love prime time games, hope we get some "
